GIMP - Developer Web image editor


GIMP is a program that runs on Windows, Linux and OS X for free image editing systems. It is a set of well designed software which is in competition with major commercial software for manipulation of the image in a web development environment. If you need to create graphics for your web page, GIMP is an attractive and effective option.

GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program - which essentially means that it is a graphical software open source.

GIMP has received much criticism from people who complain about lack of features in Photoshop, the industry-leading software graphics handling. GIMP lack some CMYK printing support as Photoshop, but for most developers web that works very well - and since it costs nothing, it is a very attractive option for the 699 USD price tag that comes with Photoshop.

Information to manage Process Recordings

Process Recordings are stored under GDS/audit/workflow dir.

By default the max.# of recordings that can be stored is set to 50.

With LC ES2, there was a bug with recordings not getting cleaned up automatically when the max. # of recording configured are reached and resulting in – OverlappingFileLockException. This was fixed in LC ES2 SP1 and later. So, after installing ES2 SP1, old recordings will be deleted automatically once the max. limit is reached.

The max. # of recordings value can be configured via workbench -
1. open Component View in Workbench.
2. right click on “Components/AuditWorkflowDSC/AuditWorkflowService:1.0”
3. select “Edit Service Configuration…”
4. change value to increase/decrease max limit.
5. restart service.

2 Steps that change the world with PowerPoint

This is the first in an occasional series of posts by Mike Parkinson discussing how you can use PowerPoint in different industries and for diverse audiences. Mike is an internationally recognized visual communication expert and multi-published author, and he operates BizGraphics On Demand (editable PowerPoint graphics for download).

Love it or hate it, PowerPoint is everywhere and is changing how we communicate. It's one of the few software packages with a diverse graphic capability that is easy to learn. Business professionals, many of whom have no design background, are making PowerPoint their visual forum to communicate their solutions to potential clients.

So, why are more professionals using visual communication -- and PowerPoint -- to reach their audiences?

Good presenters use PowerPoint to simplify, prioritize, organize, and communicate information, via two important steps of effective communication. They provide the foundation for creating and using visuals in PowerPoint.

I recently asked Rick Altman, author of Why Most PowerPoint Presentations Suck and How You Can Make Them Better, about a common mistake presenters make when designing their presentations. He replied simply, "Too much crap."

And Altman is completely right. Many times, presenters believe the adage that more is better. Perhaps too much is a good thing when enjoying a piece of homemade apple pie; however, in visual communication, the opposite is true. If your audience is too distracted with your vibrant color scheme, opposing graphic styles, and long bulleted lists, then they will miss your message.Here is a slide from a sales presentation that compares televisions. By setting the information on top of each other with bars comparing life expectancy, quality, and cost, you can see the difference, which wouldn't be as compelling if I had just listed the numbers. I also placed a trophy as an icon for "best in class" and used a checklist to summarize the findings of the presenter's product to further highlight the better television.

Connie Malamed, author of Visual Language For Designers: Principles For Creating Graphics That People Understand, found that we can only process around four bits of visual information at one time. Clean, clear, and easy-to-understand graphics create a visual hierarchy and allow viewers to focus on the most important information. A pyramid graphic, like the one below, is a great visual to use for hierarchy. In the graphic, training provides the foundation for the other steps that lead to a "win" for the organization.

PowerPoint gives you the right tools to turn slides of text and graphic clutter into clear visuals to create visual hierarchy. It includes many easy-to-use tools (SmartArt graphics used to create the pyramid graphic shown above, theme colors, charts, shapes, custom animation, etc.) to help you generate effective graphics. You can quickly insert clip art, photographs, and template artwork into your presentation to add impact to your message and help audiences remember your company, your solution.

Styles may be the most important feature in Word. Learn to use Styles and not only will you save yourself a lot of time from having to click bold buttons, italicize, change the font, change it back again, adjust the paragraph spacing, and ... well, you get the idea. But it also allows you to access other features in Word that will make your work so much easier.

Best colors for Web design


There are many web design tutorials which cover the Web color in detailed scientific terms. However, for our goals, briefly discuss color Web and how it will be used in the Web portfolio. You will develop a set of colors for your pages to the portfolio. This means that you will specify colors for your background of the page, the type used on the page and all the other static elements in the page. There are two types of color that can be used in Web graphics. Colors can be associated with Web graphics files formats refer us to: GIF and JPG. GIF

GIF files use the colors of the index. Index color is composed of 216 common colors found on all screens in all Web browsers and computer. These common colours reside in a Web palette. The Web color palette is available in Macromedia Fireworks and Adobe Photoshop, and they can be used in the design of Web displays without color difference when the pages are on the Internet. In addition, the Web palette is the standard color palette in Macromedia Dreamweaver and Macromedia Flash. This allows us to achieve color consistency across Web applicationstent and Web browsers.

We use Web colors for:

o a text/HTML Web text

Web page backgrounds o

Web page colors o used for table or layer backgrounds

o Web links

o GIF JPG files

JPG files using red, green and blue (RGB) color of the chart. RGB color is also known as the color name. Full color sections include graphics bitmap or photographs. We want to use the photographs as much as possible within a portfolio of Web to add to the Visual rhetoric and the story we are trying to present. Use of photographs, including their manipulation programs like Adobe Photoshop, require a brief description of the RGB color model. RGB color is known as additive color because of all the colors, red, green, and blue are added together in their full intensity which would create a pure white. Mixtures of the relative strengths of these colors, "create millions of colours may show the computer monitors" (Kimball, 2003, p. 95). The strength of these colors is set in from 0 to 255 with zero being less intensity and 255 being the highest intensity. When red, green and blue are combined with zero intensity, the result is black. At full power, high-intensity, where the values are set to 255, 255, 255, the result is pure white. To remember, here is a simple metaphor. Think of the red, green and blue as switches. Each switch of light using a cursor has a range from 0 to 255. When all white switches are set to zero, the room is dark. That all switches are set to 255, the room is lit at full intensity. Once you start to use applications such as Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia fireworks image editing, you start exploring the color of the computer in your graphics and photographs. When talking about use of colour, full or colour RGB is present in the photographic JPG files and other works of art created. Images full color should not be saved as GIF files because of the limited number of colors. By limited color, the color image will represent real colors using the existing Web palette of 216 colors.

This creates a poor, raster, ugly image. This is why it is very important to use the right file for each specific graphic format. When the conversion of the images printed on the Web, it is important that you do not use the color model CMYK for what anyone including graphics. The CMYK model is not a friendly monitor color space. CMYK graphics cannot be considered in CMYK on the Internet. They can only be represented by the RGB color model or Web safe (indexed) color model. Here are the rules for the color of the Web.

The page sizes default Web provided in the Web applications user-friendly and above are an excellent place to start. You will probably use a small, custom size for the pop-up Windows. This means that you can get a clear sign of the preview a page before going through the process of making a HTML Web page. This helps the design and production. It helps eliminate guess them work, then develop-ing pages. Size also depends on the resolution. Then discuss resolution.

One More Screen

The mLearnCon conference is over for 2011. I’m sitting in my electronic bubble at SFO, headphones playing Josh Radin, almost succeeding in drowning out a group of elementary school cricket players running wild on the other side of the gate.

This year’s mLearnCon conference, hosted by the eLearning Guild, and attended and delivered by both new and venerable elearning professionals, has left me in a buzzing yet reflective state. As after every eLearning conference I’ve attended, my cerebral factory is in fifth gear, cranking out widgets.

I attended the conference to both impart and collect information. The collecting part always wins; if that ever stops being the case then I’ve stopped learning or listening, both of which are key to staying relevant in the software world, so I’ll continue to do my best at both. My outcome from this year’s mLearnCon was a mix: what I thought I knew was reinforced, and best of all, new perspectives were born.

What was reinforced is that the eLearning Guild community is rich with people who are working hard to meet their training mandates, entice and engage a sometimes challenging or reluctant learning audience, and keep up with technology. As always, we need to do all this with diminishing budgets, small teams, and executives who don’t always ‘get’ the symbiotic relationship between learning and technology. eLearning professionals continue to be a passionate group, challenging old paradigms and pushing for what’s new to also be purposeful and relevant to our learners.

The new perspective I gained was that more than any medium shift since electronic learning began, learning on mobile devices changes the game. This new, personal, everywhere delivery medium is challenging long-held metaphors of learning and information delivery.

Things have changed even since last year’s first annual mLearnCon conference. A year ago questions of relevance pervaded. Will mobile learning catch on? Does mobile learning really apply to my organization? Should I choose just one or two devices and limit delivery to those alone? This year the questions are different. How do I meet the permeating demand for learning content on mobile devices? How will I ever keep up with this demand, and deliver content to the wealth of devices and mobile operating systems in the hands of my learners?

The great news is this: mobile learners are voracious. They love having information in their pocket, and they are begging for more. The challenge: they expect mobile offerings to be available in their hands right now.

At mLearn I was impressed to see that some companies are already meeting the demand. They’ve jumped into the fray, run limited pilots on limited device sets, developed content with custom tools, and they have been successful. They need a better way, though, because the pilot projects are over and the demand is even higher. While these trailblazers were making one or two small groups of users happy on their BlackBerry smartphones, thousands of others bought a new XOOM, an iPad, a Droid X, or a PlayBook (to name only a few), and those learners want in on the game.

My mLearnCon take-away as a product manager at Adobe is that the direction we are heading with eLearning is going to simplify some of these challenges, and accelerate the delivery of quality content to multiple screens. One of the biggest problems and outstanding questions continues to be delivering content to devices: content that will work, will look good, and will run across devices; content that will communicate with a secure server, as an extension of current learning management systems, and provide the data needed to track the mobile audience as well as keep track of desktop learners today. That content needs to be engaging and memorable, and it needs to work in the context of the learner. We are bringing learning to people who are on the go, on the move, in need of an update now, or who want to fill formerly ‘wasted’ moments with a purposeful activity. If I can spend my 5 minutes in line at Peet’s Coffee learning something I didn’t know about a topic relevant to me, I will keep coming back for more.

This is the work we have ahead of us as an eLearning community, and as a product group here at Adobe. Our research and development is heading in this direction, and I hope to see my cerebral widgets come to life in a tappable, swipe-able app one day soon. The Adobe eLearning development teams understand the pain that this exciting new learning modality brings to the creation and delivery of training and knowledge transfer, and we are working to make it simple to add mobile learning to your portfolio. When we do, the next Android, iOS, BlackBerry, or other device and OS update will not cause a challenge, or dictate an expensive new development project, but will be checked off as just one more screen in the ecosystem of your training programs.

Getting started with Web Design part 2 - becoming a designer - tools and software


Before starting as a web designer, you need the right kit. We have our own personal list here, but keep in mind that everyone has different opinions on what software is the best, with a million different suggestions for each type of employment.

Our list includes what are generally considered the most popular tools. They offer also the largest amount of help and tutorials, so that they are perfect for beginners.

Equipment

You obviously need a PC for web design. You may think that you already have a PC read this, but is good enough? A slow or old PC will work against you as a designer.

If you can afford the price, many programmers prefer to use a Mac. If you are on a budget or simply prefer Windows properly, you will be not any disadvantage that many popular tools work on both platforms.

Having a large amount of RAM is the most important factor for designers. You will find often yourself opening several intensive programs in memory at once. With these programs to communicate with each other eat fast memory, so you will need at least 2 GB to work effectively. Something more than 4 GB tends to be overkill now.

Because you often working with 3D graphics and video editing, you do not need a particularly fast processor. If you are on a tight budget, you can upgrade the memory in your computer for about £ 30, which should give you good speed boost if your computer is several years old.

Other extras, you should consider are a graphics tablet and dual monitors. These will greatly increase your productivity, but can be expensive.

Software

o of graphic editing: the jury is still out on which program is best for beginners to learn graphic editing. The argument is generally between Adobe Fireworks and Adobe Photoshop. There are a variety of training manuals for both, and it is worth your time to become familiar with both anyway. Adobe Illustrator is also a very useful to have on hand.
o Web browsers: a major challenge for Web designers is to make their site the same look on every single web browser. Because each browser interprets different things, you must ensure that they act as you expect. Download Chrome, Firefox, IE, Opera and Safari, because these are the browsers that will be used by your customers. Fortunately, all are free!
o Design: hands down the best tool for Web designers is Adobe Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver let's you mess with all kinds of page elements visually, so you can actually see the effect of your changes. Other features as a system of color for your code and your auto-completion will come very handy for beginners.

The cost of the software will be the main problem for many young designers. There are expensive alternatives to Adobe products, however. Nvu can replace Dreamweaver and GIMP substitute Photoshop. Both on Windows and are completely free, but will be able to offer the range of tutorials and guides available for the largest programs of name. Adobe often offers tests of 30 days of their products, so you can try to see if they are worth the high initial cost.

Although there are several other programs needed (or desired) by designers, with a few major programs, you should be able to learn a lot on trade.

ONE - GET YOUR MIND STRAIGHT

In the past I used doodle on a paper note pad or sketch out on a white board a mind map or a process. You no longer have to do this...if you get Freemind. Freemind is an intuitive piece of software that helps you map out your thoughts.It's a FREE download. Try it you'll find it easy to use find it at: sourceforge.net/projects/freemind/

TWO - EDIT AND FORMAT YOUR TEXT

In terms of writing out text I use either Windows Live Writer and/or Notepad. Notepad comes with Windows and it's better to use because it doesn't ADD funny formatting code that Microsoft Word does. The only time this is an issue is when you're doing a post to your Blog. You can always post directly to your Blog from the WordPress admin panel but I find that working from a full screen is easier for me. Windows Live Writer is a cool tool because it works like a WYSIWYG (what-you-see-is-what-you-get) editor. It allows you to format text, insert video, links etc directly into the post. It can also be synchronized with your BLOG...so when you're done you can upload it directly to your blog along with all the images, video and links etc. Best of all...they are FREE too!

THREE - ADD VALUE BY GIVING AWAY SOMETHING

PDF (short for Portable Data Format) is mostly associated with ADOBE as I believe they were the creators. Again, why shell out dollars if you can get something that works perfectly fine for FREE. Check out: dopdf.com you can download free software that basically installs a PDF Print Driver to your computer. Now you can create a great looking document using WORD or POWERPOINT and instead of printing to your printer you choose "doPDF" as your printer and VOILA! You now have a PDF document that you can sell on Clickbank or give away as incentive for signing up to your email list. Another great feature of doPDF is that it preserves the links in the document so if your give-a-way goes viral people can easily get back to your site by clicking on the link.

FOUR - CREATE TRAFFIC BY SHARING YOUR PRESENTATIONS

It's similar to YouTube but specifically designed for POWERPOINT presentations (slideshare.net). Once uploaded you can create embed codes for sharing on your BLOG or on other sites. IF you learn how to make proper presentations this could be a solid traffic generator for you.

FIVE - GIVE YOUR BLOG SOME LIFE WITH SOME IMAGES

Images are what invoke emotion in your readers. Combine the right images with text and you can create urges to buy or hold reader interest. Bigstockphoto.com is a site that will offer you the right image to give you the proper look and feel.

SIX - EDIT YOUR IMAGES TO GET YOUR DESIRED LOOK AND FEEL

A tilt here, a crop there, converting to black and white. You can use Microsoft Picture Manager to change up some of your photos. Couple of other FREE options are: IrfanView and if you're interested in getting PHOTOSHOP quality software at a bargain basement price of ZERO I suggest GIMP. You can do the edits as discussed above or create images from scratch. It's truly an amazing piece of software go get it at: gimp.org.

Another tool that can add life to your site is called Animoto, and it helps you create simple slide show presentations with music that you can stream straight from your blog. It's super easy: upload a bunch of your images or photos or short videos...upload music...bada bing bada boom the rest is taken care of. You then grab the embed code and paste it into your blog or Facebook page with a link back to your blog etc.

SEVEN - ADD SOME SOUND FOR ANOTHER DIMENSION

Adding sound will enhance your reader's experience and keep them coming back for more. Here are a couple of audio tools and ideas on how to incorporate: Instead of typing out a blog post record yourself. You can record audio using software included with windows save it as an MP3 clip and upload it to your blog for your readers to download. You can create interview by doing over the phone interviews with experts in your niche by using a service called Skype - skype.com. Before you do the interview...download recording software to record the call at pamela.biz. If you want to be like the cool cats....stream you audio directly from your blog. To do this get the Audio Player WordPress Plugin 1pixelout.net/code/audio-player-wordpress-plugin/. For easy install, search for it from your WordPress Admin Panel in the Plugins section. REMEMBER: it needs to be in MP3 format to work. Just make sure you export your final audio production to an mp3 file format for this to work.

EIGHT - INCORPORATE VIDEO FOR THE FINAL FRONTIER

Incorporate video and your blog will scream QUALITY. After all, that's the name of the game right? Keep your visitors coming back for more by offering great valuable and FREE content. It's called developing a relationship my friend. Windows Movie Maker is preinstalled on your computer already and it's really easy to use. Record some video or import some still images or even slide shows and you can cut n' paste edit your way to an Academy Award Winning spectacle. Okay....maybe not but with some practice you'll be able add the trust element to your blog especially if you video tape yourself...people ALWAYS like to see who they are reading...it's gives them a connection to you.

Another way to add value to your reader is by giving video tutorials on how to do things. Personally, I'd rather read instructions as it allows me to do things faster and jot notes along the way.

You can capture screen flow by using a piece of FREE software called CAM STUDIO camstudio.org. It's pretty easy to use. Basically start it up and it records everything that you are doing on screen.

Import to Windows Movie Maker for some edits and you have another piece of creative content to add to your blog.

Ever see those clickable links find within YouTube Videos? You can do that too...upload your VIDS to YouTube then use LinkedTube.com to add clickable links to your Videos. This is great for adding affiliate links or links back to your blog or sales pages.

By now you've probably suffering from information overload...don't worry! You don't need to rush out and incorporate everything discussed above all in one day! ROME - wasn't built in a day either;). Your site or Blog should be an evolution of you. What I hope to have accomplished for you today is shorten the amount of time it will take you to get your Blog to the vision you want it to be. And hopefully, stimulate your creative juices to really make your site stand out

Top 5 Open Source Software"that saved my life!


Open Source Software (free software) is available in all forms and all different operating systems. Some work really well and others are simply a waste of time plane. There were a few Open Source programs that are me are really out of sticky situations all free of charge. I personally use Mac OSX operating system, but I think that all software that I list will work through of multiple operating systems.

My favorite personal top top top, my number one, must be virtual box. Virtual box is running different operating systems both directly on your computer. Use virtual box on my MAC 10.4.11 Tiger operating system to run Windows XP (soon to be on the rise of classification for Leopard on Mac and Windows 7) virtual box can run operating systems either transparent or in a separate window, I prefer the transparent mode which allows you to use windows on your mac desktop programs. My main use for windows on my mac is that I develop Web sites that must be checked through all web browsers, but you can run windows programs.

* VirtualBox is a freeware if you want to run windows or mac as additional OS, you must purchase the windows or mac OS. You can install the free Linux operating system.

Number two on my list should be FireFox. FireFox is a web browser which is a dream of web developers. There are so many free plugins that you install in firefox for as many different uses, blog to find key words, ftp' Bookmarking ing. Plugins help you manage multiple tasks in a go and all in one place. Lost, it was my thumb, and was close to become my a chosen number one.

Coming in close to the number three is Audacity. Audacity is an interplates sound editor which allows recording, editing and export of a virity of the formats such as mp3, aiff and M4A. Use Audacity for editing sound from a microphone tie clip which was captured on a ZOOM H2 SD recorder before importing FCP to paste on my clips. The amount of this free baby Edition is outstanding and saved me loads of money on paid alternatives.

A watch of life for my Mac to the number four is VLC player. For those who are DVDs may like to use MV2 compression of their films for the best quality of burn it to DVD. (I know that some will say H.264 is better, but I prefer Mv2) The problem is that the Mac does not support playing back this type of file, except on DVD Studio Pro, or if you purchase a Quicktime plug-in from them for £ 20. I like to watch the exported images by before importing it into my project of DVD Studio Pro, and some of you there can just watch Mv2 (or Mpeg2) files without having to compress in another format. This is where VLC media player, it is the only media player that I found which will play Mpeg2 video on the mac with on the Quicktime plug-in to be installed.

Number five is Gimp. GIMP is an alternative open source to Photoshop that also supports layers. Teach students a few design of web sites of the month, and the imaging tutorials, I use Gimp because it is just as effective as with on Photoshop label price. When I teach that I would like to use the software that is fully accessible to people I teach, instead of having to fork out loads of money on programs.

There was a time where I thought that I would never be a "computer" person I was in the seventh year, taking a class with MS-DOS and a program called turtle. (I know why they called it turtle.) It was enough devilishly slow). I had to just key in about 50 commands to draw a line of half inch. I did all this that qualified for this. A small typo and my line going in the wrong direction total. I got a C + in the class.

Today, I am a non computer geek. I can learn virtually any graphics, text processing or a program of public services on the fly, and I even surprise myself with tips html from time to time. Now for the good news: so can you. "No, I can't!" say you. Yes, you CAN.

Today's children are tech-heads. Never light a child four years to capture the mouse and start web-surfing, as it was nothing? It happens all the time. At the age of 15 years, children are the Web design and manipulation of photos as old pros. How can this be? They grow more intelligent nowadays?

Well, I know that some parents who will tell you so, but the truth is, computer today, programs are designed to maintain an average human inexperienced can learn quickly and apply them in multiple ways. We call the Applications because they are supposed to be applied to practical use to improve our quality of life.

MS-DOS I mentioned in my introduction. For the most part, the user is not need to know a thing about MS-DOS. The reason? Modern computers run on operating systems, such as Windows PC and the Mac OS. The operating system covers wacky appearance all that code from MS-DOS with windows and buttons that beg us practically out loud, "click ME!" And click on them that we do.

As the operating system, most programs use what is called an interface: as shell or skin which hides the code and you can browse and manipulate with simple clicks and orders. This interface is what allows us to just hang out on the most and beginning of things occur on the computer without knowing a thing see programming or codes or what either.

It is these Windows that we can open and close, we can click buttons and menus, we can get down with our trusty mouse, which has tasks of great magnitude in record time, with these powerful machines. We can do some incredible things just by pointing and clicking. If you think that this subject long enough, he could blow your mind.

Point and click. This is the basic concept of the use of the mouse, and it is also a simple method that 3 years it take with ease. SEE, CATCH. This is how the work of computers, in a nutshell. With this concept in mind, computer programmers is a beautiful thing for us all respectful users: they have sufficient to develop a standard method to navigate in most programs.

Search... and find. It is essentially the fact that your main points and clicks on your brain. Whenever you use a program, you are looking for a word or a symbol or a button that will perform a desired action or take you to a desired destination. So, what is the great challenge? The word that describes the action that you should think to made. Words like... SAVE. MOVE. DELETE. CHANGE. COPY. PULP. You know these words! And you can learn words even easier.

Now, I ask you, what could be easier than to learn the simple language of computer use?

If you want to perform any action in any program, go to the top of the screen and read the words y. With few exceptions, most of them said things like file, view, EDIT, FORMAT, tools, help. If you click on each of these words in any program, they bring a menu of options more. (I probably unnecessary to explain this, but I try to make a point here).

For example, use the file menu. We all know what is behind door number one. NEW file, save, print... Damn, it's too easy isn't. Let me now point five more general facts about computer programs:

In most word processing programs, drop-down menus are all much the same.

In most illustration programs, the drop-down menus are all substantially the same.

In most programs of public services, drop-down menus are all substantially the same.

In most photo editing programs, the drop-down menus are all substantially the same.

In most Internet browsers, the drop-down menus are all substantially the same.

Why take such pains to report this? Because I want to shed light on what is often overlooked by the capricious user. Because text processing menus most contain identical or menus drop down almost identical, if you know a word processing program, you pretty much know all the. This applies for all other categories of programs as well. And even if the menus are not identical, you know the language. You can hunt the words that perform unwanted actions.

At this stage, I would like to thank you for paste through this tirade with me, what can I do my final point:

The only thing you taking new learning computer programs is your own attitude underperformance. Point and click. Seek and find. There is nothing easier than this. For any person over there who argues that they are just "not a tecchie" and that he cannot learn programs: does step doubt yourself. You can learn the programs!

If you master Photoshop, you will be able to use any Photoshop knock-off program with relative ease. If you learn Microsoft Outlook, you should have little or no problem with other e-mail management programs. This is true for all kinds of programs.

How can you become skilled in the major categories of computer programs? Search free, downloadable instructions on the internet, or pay a small amount of training books. Connect with a computer-savvy friend a tutorial soon. Click on the Help menu and read each issue explained. To do this, and Masters programs during the rescue of the thousands of computer training classes that you do not need.

Must have a free software for Geeks


Are you a designer? Love gadgets? Expert in computer science? As piracy and refinement of software and hardware? You are a geek. Believe it or not, you're like me. OK, now, let's not fight on the definition of a geek.

Here is a list of (all free) software for geeks, in my view. You can download each by clicking on its name:

firefox/Chrome: these top dogs in the world of web browser is not only recommended for everyone, but they are also a playground of a geek. If you use Internet Explorer and you feel you are tech-savvy, think again, then think again and think that until you have one of these installed browsers.

Notepad ++: this is another must have tool for a geek. Notepad included with Windows is fine. It is simple and complete for the design of web sites and there just as a normal person needs. But you are a geek. You have Notepad ++. It has color coding help when you are web design, it has more features and anything you can think of. Oh yes, and it is open-source.

Dropbox: Wow, the file perfect synchronization tool. It is the ultimate choice (especially for geeks, once again) for backup and synchronization. It is not entirely free, but there is not many restrictions. The free account gets a decent 2 GB of online storage, and you can develop with a tax, but I never felt need for it. You can also get an additional 250 MB for completing the tutorial, and more free space with the instructions here. Dropbox is magic. You can download any type of file, any size (except if it exceeds the size of your account), and above all, it behaves as a different folder on your computer, with the addition of a function on the synchronization of constantly.

7-Zip: WinZip is so old fashioned. It is not even free. 7-Zip is little, light and open-source, making it completely free. Windows comes with a fine file Extractor. But it cannot retrieve the most recent file types, better compressed. 7 Zip expands the capacity by integrating with your operating system and it can extract almost all kinds of compressed files. It is the ultimate compression utility.

µTorrent: hey, come, torrents are not illegal. It all depends on what you download. Torrents can be very useful for downloading large software, and if you are a geek, you need to know the torrents. µTorrent is the best torrent out there. You need to do so. You may need it during the downloading of large things open source, such as OpenOffice or large versions of Linux (see, I only talk about free software here).

TeamViewer: how a geek can live without it? TeamViewer, if you've never heard of it, is a software of remote support and remote access. You can use it to impress friends or help them when they are in trouble and need your geek expertise. It is free for commercial use, and there are no limits. When you have TeamViewer, you can easily tell the person on the other side to download a smaller version (or the full features) and you will be able to use their automatically generated user ID and password to connect to their computer and discover the problem. I, personally, have never used for remote access to my computer.

GIMP: the open source GNU Image Manipulation Program free. It is probably the best free photo editing tool and (even more) is probably a good alternative to Photoshop. OK, Photoshop fans, not upgrade me for this. The only condition is (no, it's free and OpenOffice.org) he has a slight learning curve. You can find collaborés better if you do not so much in the photo editing (that I use most of the time).

CCleaner: choice of the geek in computer cleaning utilities. It can clean up all the gunk that cleans disk cleanup, more a lot of things that other apps leave behind. It can also clean the registry and work from a flash drive without problems, for use on other computers.

It was therefore, very basic freeware, a geek must have in its arsenal for everyday computing. I miss something important? It by throwing in comments, and I can add it in the list.
