Review: 64 bit Adobe preview handler shows PDF thumbnails in the Windows File Explorer

If I have a Windows 8 64 bit upgrade-back a few months, then something strange happened. The thumbnails for all of my PDF files disappeared. Normally, if I show an Explorer folder, I have PDF files "view large icons" (as it then gives a preview of me on the first page of the file looks).  But Windows 8 wiped all of it. I could not even get the default Adobe PDF logo. So I have my usual and went Googling for answers and ended up with a free program called 64 bit Adobe preview handler.

The app itself is just a simple box, which can be closed as soon as you click on "apply update".

This small app (it weighs in at a ridiculous 1 MB) makes a small registry, the fix bringing back your PDF thumbnail images. The question of the disappearing thumbnails does not seem to only Windows 8 but limited. Anyone using Vista or Windows the problem may occur 7 64-bit, and 64-bit Adobe preview handler is here to save the day.

Just the usual do download and install, and when you start it, you will see a small window. There is pretty much nothing to configure-no options or anything else. Click 'apply update', and start Windows Explorer.  If it still doesn't work, you have to delete, also your thumbnail cache but do not worry, this is very easy to do. Just run Disk Cleanup utility, select the drive C, place a check mark in the field of "Thumbnails" and then click OK. The system will do the rest.

Check you should get back to Windows Explorer, and respawn your PDF thumbnail images see.

You have to keep in mind, that this is no official solution from Adobe, and according to the developer this fix, Adobe doesn't seem too much time for an official fix make be.  Yes, until they in trouble (the possibly never), can be with this unofficial fix by Leo Davidson is more than adequate.  And when you the update how, then support the developer send him a PayPal donation.  This encourages him to continue the unofficial work he does on Adobe's behalf.

Note: The download button on the product information page takes you to the manufacturers website where you can download the latest version of the software.

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Today we continue our series of BI related posts highlighting a recent announcement for a new add-in for Excel.

On February 27, we announced an early look at a future addition to our self-service line-up with Microsoft Data Explorer Preview for Excel.  Data Explorer enhances the self-service BI experience in Excel by simplifying data discovery and access to a broad range of public and enterprise data sources, enabling richer insights from data that has traditionally been difficult for users to get to. If you haven't seen it, check out the video below to see how Data Explorer enhances the BI experience.

With Data Explorer, users can now quickly and easily import data from a variety of sources, including Web, Excel, Text, Database and Azure. Access to non-traditional sources such as Active Directory, Facebook and big data solutions like Hadoop are now within the reach of any user.

Connecting directly to data from the web is easy and intuitive. Filtering and transforming your data can be done in just a few clicks and importing your final data into Excel is straightforward.  Given this is a preview, these features may appear differently in the future versions.

To learn more about how you can put these new capabilities to work for you, follow the links below.

Internet Explorer 9 Hardware Acceleration and Third Party Hypervisors

Working with VMware, Microsoft has identified an issue within Internet Explorer 9 that may prevent third party hypervisors from being able to take advantage of IE9's hardware acceleration feature. As a result, IE9 will default to software rendering when running in some virtual machines. Internet Explorer 9 interacts with non-Microsoft hypervisors differently than earlier versions of Internet Explorer. Microsoft is working on a prioritized update to Internet Explorer 9 and plans to make it available in the coming weeks to ensure that customers using third party hypervisors, such as those offered by VMware and other vendors will have the best possible experience.
