Windows 8.1 Preview and a workaround for your favorite Win+S shortcut key

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Today Microsoft released the Consumer Preview for Windows 8.1, also known as Windows Blue. If you try it out you'll notice a lot of awesome changes. But try out the Windows + S shortcut for screen clipping in OneNote and you'll find it doesn't work as expected! Don't panic, a fix is coming soon and in the meantime, you can use the workaround below.

The most loved keyboard shortcut in OneNote desktop, you can press Windows + S to invoke the screen clipper. This lets you select areas of your screen to send to your notes and puts it on to your clipboard to paste (CTRL + V) anywhere.

Screen clipping

You can read about other OneNote shortcuts here: OneNote 2013 Keyboard Shortcuts

New in Windows 8.1, Windows + S brings up a Search experience designed to help you find things more quickly from any application. The new OneNote shortcut key will be Windows + Shift + S, but this won't be available until later in the year as an update.  We know how useful the old Windows + S shortcut key is, so we're providing a workaround in the meantime.

For now, you can manually set a shortcut key to Windows + A. You'll have to change the shortcut key through your registry. (Note: Unintended changes in your registry can cause problems, so make sure you follow these instructions exactly.)

1. Use Windows + R to pull up this dialog, and type regedit.

regedit

2. Now in the folders on the left, navigate down this path:

 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\OneNote\Options\Other

Note: The path requires the specific version of Office. In the path above, 15.0 refers to Office 2013. If you're using Office 2010, type 14.0 in place of 15.0 at the end of the path.  Replace 15.0 with 12.0 if you're using Office 2007.

3. In the folder named Other, right-click the white space underneath the files in that folder and select New, then select DWORD (32-bit) Value.

 DWORD dialog

4. In the text entry field that pops up, type ScreenClippingShortcutKey. You just created a new DWORD. (If you are in Office 12.0, this DWORD will already exist.)

5. Right click this DWORD and select Modify, then in the Value field, type 41.

Your new shortcut key has been assigned to Windows + A. Now log off and log on again and you should be all set!

Remember, the Windows + Shift + S fix is coming later this year, but hopefully this will help you out until then!

The Windows 8.1 Preview is here!

A couple of weeks ago, Antoine Leblond talked about continuing the Windows 8 vision with Windows 8.1. It continues to push ahead with our bet that the PC industry is going through a shift that is driven by mobility. We previously announced that Windows 8.1 will be a free update for Windows 8 consumers later this year through the Windows Store - but today we are providing an opportunity for people to take a first-hand look at many of the new features and improvements with the Windows 8.1 Preview.

Over the past several weeks, I’ve been running the Windows 8.1 Preview on many of my PCs and tablets. And I’m really enjoying it.

DSC05558

My Start screen is filled with all kinds of apps with tiles in various sizes – Windows 8.1 adds two new tile sizes: large (really big) and small (really small). For example – I have the Weather app as a big tile and it now shows me today’s and tomorrow’s forecasts. Big tiles can have much more information on them, which is great. On my devices with smaller screens – like my tablet – I feel I can pack in more apps into a single view on my Start screen with the new small tile sizes. The best part is my Start screen customizations, apps, and files get synced across all my Windows 8.1 PCs and tablets, which is awesome. If I change my Start screen, install new apps, pin new apps to my Start screen on one PC – that all gets synced to my other PCs. The Windows Store has been redesigned, making it super easy to find the apps I want. And several of the apps that come with Windows 8 have been updated for Windows 8.1 – plus there’s some new ones which you’ll hear about today.

For more on features included in Windows 8.1, I suggest reading this blog post. For a more complete look at all the features in Windows 8.1, I suggest checking out the Product Guide.

Before you install the Windows 8.1 Preview, it is also highly recommended you backup any files you have on your PC or tablet first. Please see the Windows 8.1 Preview FAQ before installing, which includes information on how to go back to Windows 8 if you need to. There are certain cases in which you will not be able to go back to Windows 8 after installing the Windows 8.1 Preview so please read the FAQ before proceeding.

Install the Windows 8.1 Preview!

Go to the Windows 8.1 Preview page on Windows.com. The Windows 8.1 Preview will be installed through the Windows Store. Please see the Windows 8.1 Preview FAQ for the minimum requirements needed to install the Windows 8.1 Preview.

Please note: If you are on Windows RT and have installed a language pack, please don’t install the Windows RT 8.1 Preview at this time. A fix is coming so check back soon.

setup3

But first, you need to install a small update provided on the Preview page that enables Windows 8 to offer the Windows 8.1 Preview update through the Windows Store. After the update is installed, you will need to reboot your PC. When Windows 8.1 is released, this update to the Windows Store will be installed automatically by Windows Update.

setup4

You will be greeted with a message to install the Windows 8.1 Preview when logging back in to your PC after reboot. To commence with the install of the Windows 8.1 Preview – press “Go to the Store.”

setup5

You will be taken to the Windows Store page for the Windows 8.1 Preview where you can click “Download” to install the Windows 8.1 Preview. Here, you will also find links for more information about the Windows 8.1 Preview including the FAQ which I recommend reading before proceeding with the install.

setup6

Then Windows 8.1 Preview will download. Before it installs, it will do a series of compatibility checks to make sure your PC can run the Preview. If an issue is found, the installation won’t proceed.

Please note: Some tablets and PCs running newer 32-bit Atom processors require updates to their graphics drivers before they can run the Windows 8.1 Preview. Those tablets and PCs include the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2, ASUS VivoTab TF810C, HP Envy X2, HP ElitePad 900, Samsung ATIV Smart PC, and Fujitsu ARROWS Tab. We are working closely with Intel and OEM partners to deliver updated drivers that will allow you to install the Windows 8.1 Preview as soon as possible.

UPDATED 7/2/2013:  New drivers are now available for most tablets and PCs running Intel’s newer 32-bit Atom processors and now can install the Windows 8.1 Preview. Please note that the Fujitsu ARROWS Tab series of tablets are still blocked at this time and we continue to work closely with our partners to resolve this issue.

If everything checks out, your PC may reboot a few times as the Windows 8.1 Preview installs!

Start - Surface Pro 2

After the installation completes, there will be a few more screens to click through. To take full-on advantage of the new cloud connectivity in the Windows 8.1 Preview, you will need to sign in to your PC with a Microsoft account. And make sure you take a look at the beta fish tattoo for the Start screen – watch its bubbles move.

If you are an enterprise customer or IT Professional and interested in testing the Windows 8.1 Preview out – stay tuned for more information in the next day or so from us via the Windows for your Business Blog and Springboard Series Blog. Please note that the Windows 8.1 Preview ISO files will be made available within the next day.

If you run into any issues or have any questions and want to engage with other Windows enthusiasts, please head on over to the Microsoft Community forums for 8.1 Preview and 8.1 RT Preview. Our Windows support agents will be active there and taking part in discussions. We won’t be able to provide technical support via the comments here on our blog posts but definitely let us know what you think of Windows 8.1.

Our CEO Steve Ballmer is kicking off Build 2013 right now in San Francisco – you can watch the live stream here from Channel 9. Julie Larson-Green and Antoine Leblond will be joining Steve on stage to talk about and show off Windows 8.1. We’ll have more to say later this morning so watch for a follow-up blog post from me soon!

Review: 64 bit Adobe preview handler shows PDF thumbnails in the Windows File Explorer

If I have a Windows 8 64 bit upgrade-back a few months, then something strange happened. The thumbnails for all of my PDF files disappeared. Normally, if I show an Explorer folder, I have PDF files "view large icons" (as it then gives a preview of me on the first page of the file looks).  But Windows 8 wiped all of it. I could not even get the default Adobe PDF logo. So I have my usual and went Googling for answers and ended up with a free program called 64 bit Adobe preview handler.

The app itself is just a simple box, which can be closed as soon as you click on "apply update".

This small app (it weighs in at a ridiculous 1 MB) makes a small registry, the fix bringing back your PDF thumbnail images. The question of the disappearing thumbnails does not seem to only Windows 8 but limited. Anyone using Vista or Windows the problem may occur 7 64-bit, and 64-bit Adobe preview handler is here to save the day.

Just the usual do download and install, and when you start it, you will see a small window. There is pretty much nothing to configure-no options or anything else. Click 'apply update', and start Windows Explorer.  If it still doesn't work, you have to delete, also your thumbnail cache but do not worry, this is very easy to do. Just run Disk Cleanup utility, select the drive C, place a check mark in the field of "Thumbnails" and then click OK. The system will do the rest.

Check you should get back to Windows Explorer, and respawn your PDF thumbnail images see.

You have to keep in mind, that this is no official solution from Adobe, and according to the developer this fix, Adobe doesn't seem too much time for an official fix make be.  Yes, until they in trouble (the possibly never), can be with this unofficial fix by Leo Davidson is more than adequate.  And when you the update how, then support the developer send him a PayPal donation.  This encourages him to continue the unofficial work he does on Adobe's behalf.

Note: The download button on the product information page takes you to the manufacturers website where you can download the latest version of the software.

Outlook.com leaves preview as the world's fastest growing email service go from 0 to 60 million in just 6 months

Last summer, we have published a preview of the Outlook.com, a new modern e-Mail service from Microsoft.  Since then we have been humiliated by the fast pace of the adoption with more than 60 million people, who are already actively using Outlook.com.  During the same period, we have received lots of feedback and made many improvements.  Today, we are glad to announce the next step in this journey: Outlook.com comes from preview and people everywhere can get started and try it at Outlook.com.

Why you should try the Preview of SkyDrive for Windows or Mac

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

IPreview SkyDrive for Windows and Mact's so simple that explaining it is more complicated than doing it. And once you start using it, you'll wonder how you worked in Office without it.

When you install SkyDrive for Windows, it creates a folder named SkyDrive on your computer which is just like any other folder with one big difference-any file you put into it is automatically added to your SkyDrive in the cloud. And any changes you make to a file--whether on SkyDrive or your computer--gets made to that file in both places.

 SkyDrive folder in Windows Explorer

Say you're working on a Word doc and you save it to the SkyDrive folder on your computer. When you go home and work on another computer, you can open the doc on SkyDrive in the cloud, make changes and save it.

SkyDrive folder in the cloud

The next day when you turn on your work computer, the new version is in your computer's SkyDrive folder.  (Goodbye thumb drive.) That's great but maybe you already haul your laptop home so what's the big deal?

There is also a SkyDrive app for Mac OS X Lion, which gives you access to documents - online or offline - right from Finder.  You can also get SkyDrive for iPad, iPhone or Windows Phone to view or share docs from anywhere. And thanks to the Office Hub on Windows Phone, you can view, edit, and share documents on SkyDrive when you're anywhere that your laptop isn't.

How many people do you think reviewed this blog post?  Probably not as many as you think. But there were several people, and they work in lots of different buildings and places.  So instead of sending it in email and having to compare their suggestions in multiple versions, I saved it to my SkyDrive folder and visited SkyDrive.com where I could send a link to everyone's inbox.

All they had to do was click the link to open the doc in Word on their desktop or on a Windows phone, or in a web browser. Then they could make changes and save it back to SkyDrive.

If some people don't have Office, you can still collaborate with them. When they click the link, the doc automatically opens in a web browser (it does that for everyone else, too) and gives them the option of editing it right there.  They can make changes to it just as if it was a Word on a computer. Once they're done, they too, save it to SkyDrive.

When you're working with each other on SkyDrive, you can add or change formatting by using all the formatting tools you're used to in Microsoft Office.  The changes come along with the doc when you share it or save it.

The same thing can't be said if you're collaborating in Google Docs.  In Google Docs you have to leave behind your impressive Excel pie chart unless, that is, you convert your Google Doc into an Office doc after you're done collaborating. What a hassle.

If you install the SkyDrive app on several different computers, you can actually connect to any of them to find files you need-even if those files aren't yet in SkyDrive. For example, if at home you need a file that you left on your work computer, you can connect to that computer, look for the files in its folders, then add those files to the SkyDrive folder on that computer.

Since those files are automatically synced with your SkyDrive, and since your home computer is connected to that SkyDrive account, you can now access them on your home computer.

Because you don't want just anyone nosing around in your computer, SkyDrive requires a couple extra steps to get inside another computer.

The SkyDrive app puts two security hurdles in place when you want to fetch files. First you have to log in to the same SkyDrive account on each computer.  After you do that, you'll see a list of computers in your SkyDrive account in the cloud. If you click on the computer's name, SkyDrive asks if you want to send a verification code to your mobile phone or alternate email address. After you type in that code, you can start browsing and adding files to that computer's SkyDrive folder. After you've done that, they'll be automatically added to your SkyDrive account in the cloud.

Wow.  Being able to fetch files from computers kind of makes your computers part of the cloud.

(One thing about fetch--you can use a Mac to fetch files on a Windows computer, but you can't use Windows to fetch files on a Mac.)

How can you not want to install the SkyDrive app? It lets you:

Work seamlessly in Office on your computer and the cloud Access and work on Office files from any computer and lots of devices Collaborate with others using all the Office features you know without worrying about losing your formatting

In short, the SkyDrive app combines the benefits of cloud computing and Office to bring you a new and improved work life.

"Office 15" starts technical preview

This morning, we have a major development milestone reached: beginning of "Office 15" technical preview program. Office 15 is the codename for the next generation of Microsoft Office products and services, and the technical preview is our work with a select group of customers under non-disclosure agreements to share the first time we. These customers play test a key role in our development process by early builds and feedback, that we in the final release will integrate.

At this early stage in our development cycle I am too much about Office 15 parts not in a position, but I can tell you that Office 15 is the most ambitious undertaking for the Office Division. Updated with Office 15 for the first time ever, we at the same time our cloud services, server, and mobile and PC clients for Office, Office 365, Exchange, SharePoint, Lync, project and Visio. Quite simply, Office helps 15 people work, collaborate and communicate smarter and faster than ever before.

While the technical preview program is already full, all have the option of the Office of 15 public beta this summer try, and we have to share more about the version then. In the meantime, I would like to thank everyone that is included in the technical preview for their contributions and all our customers for their continued support.
