Managing project schedules in Project Professional vs. Project Online / PWA

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Project Professional 2013 and Project Online / PWA are distinct tools which work together, empowering businesses to deliver winning projects while effectively executing and achieving strategic priorities. People across the organization regularly update statuses, manage resource allocations, report progress and balance strategic objectives. These people need different capabilities at different times.

Project Professional 2013 is the project manager's everyday workhorse. They can easily plan projects and collaborate with others from virtually anywhere, staying organized and keeping projects on track with the only project management system designed to work seamlessly with other Microsoft applications and cloud services.

Project Online and PWA for Project Server link the team together and allow everyone to manage everyday work and collaborate effectively. Management also uses Project Online or PWA to access powerful strategic tools like Project Portfolio Management (PPM).

One of the easiest ways to understand the differences in these tools is to look at their output. Project Professional gives project managers the ability to manage complex project plans and easily synthesize information to guide teams in the right direction and report progress to management. Out-of-the-box reports present project data in an easily consumable format. Each report can be easily customized in an Excel-like experience. Sharing is simple, since reports are optimized for copy/paste.

Most project managers use Project Professional 2013 for the many complex necessities of managing projects and Project Online / PWA when they are away and need to work with their projects. PWA is also ideal for team participants to update their everyday work and collaborate from virtually anywhere. The richness of Project Professional 2013 is seen below, with a few features highlighted to illustrate the unique capabilities of the desktop client.

The Team Planner is a particularly powerful tool within Project Professional 2013 which makes it easy for project managers to identify and resolve potential resource overallocations. Issues can be fixed with the click of a button as the scheduling engine automatically moves tasks to avoid schedule conflicts, or manually with drag and drop.

Another important set of distinctions between Project Professional and Project Online / PWA are the user interfaces and variety of views available to visualize and format project data. The web-based interface is ideal for access from virtually anywhere and works in most web browsers, and the Project Professional 2013 desktop client takes advantage of the extra power of the Windows environment to deliver a rich and immersive interface. Here we can see a sampling of additional views available only in Project Professional.

Project for project managers

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

With the release of the new Project, there's curiosity about how best to put it to work and apply its wide range of resources in a variety of business roles. Some people are experienced users who want to learn new tricks, while others are just discovering Project's capabilities for the first time. To help, we rounded up some of our most popular articles and organized them by common work responsibilities. Here, the focus is project managers with topics including great new and updated features like reports, timelines and task paths, fresh templates in Project 2013, and even some deeper technical discussions.

It's been 28 years since the first version of Microsoft Project, and in that time, our tools for project managers have evolved to meet the needs of the constantly changing demands of their role.

Task path highilighting. Project managers' lives get a lot easier, because task path highlighting allows you to select any task and see the complete chain of predecessors and successors that are linked to it. Beyond that, the highlighting also differentiates between predecessors that are driving the scheduling of the selected task, and predecessors that are linked but can freely move without affecting the selected task.

Project plus SharePoint Task Lists. It's easy to put your task lists in the cloud with SharePoint. The SharePoint site and its tasks lists are where team members can view and edit the progress of their tasks, and Project Professional is where project managers can manage the progress of their projects. SharePoint tasks list sync empowers you to use the great functionalities of both Project and SharePoint tasks lists at the same time.

New and improved timelines in the cloud. With task lists in the cloud, it only makes sense that we would put timelines in the cloud too. Now, it's easier than ever to communicate a high-level view of your project to team members, stay focused on your upcoming personal tasks, and provide insight into all of your organization's work.

Reports. Whenever we talk to project managers, we hear one word over and over: reports. We hear how you're always preparing reports for status presentations or emails to customers, management, stakeholders, and team members, as well as how you have to make quick decisions and need reports to help you do this. All of that feedback inspired us to build a new reporting feature in the new version of Project.

New online templates. For the new Project, we've added some helpful online templates so you get started quickly, and we've even updated the template process.

New and improved schedule web part. Web-based scheduling with the new and improved schedule web part provides both the occasional and the certified project manager with the flexibility to quickly build simple and complex schedules online, and conveniently edit the plan via the browser from anywhere in the world.

Demand management. Learn how to use Project and SharePoint for demand management, empowering your team to submit new project proposals without getting overwhelmed with a deluge of information.

Let us know in the comments what you think of the new Project and how you're putting it to work for you, as well as any tips or tricks you've learned along the way. And don't forget to follow our Project for Project Managers blog feed!

Project for team members

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Project managers can do their best work when life is easy for their team members. With the release of the new Project, now there are new and improved ways for team members to do their part in keeping the project on track with minimal process friction. To help, we rounded up some of our most popular articles and organized them by common work responsibilities. Here, the focus is on team members, with topics including consolidated task management, quick collaboration, and streamlined time tracking--which should put a smile on everyone's face.

All your tasks in one place. On average, people work on 5 to 7 projects at a time. Rather than drilling into individual projects or SharePoint sites to see your assignments, now there's a new feature called My Tasks under the Newsfeed Hub to help you get a handle on what's around the bend.

Browser Compatibility. We listen to lots of customer feedback, and one top request was to make sure Project Online works in a wide range of web browsers. So that our users can access Project Online from anywhere, we expanded our browser support in Project to match the same set of browsers and devices that SharePoint supports.

Instant collaboration with Lync integration. Project Professional and Project Online now allow you to instant message, make voice and video calls, or send email with one click using Lync in the most common project views. This makes getting quick answers from other team members easier than ever.

Improvements to timesheets. We realize that one of the most tedious, and yet common, tasks that many users have to complete using Project Online is filling out a time card. To help ease the pain and make it faster for you to get back to your actual work, we've made some changes to streamline timesheets. .

Exchange integration. If you live in Outlook, it's good to have your assignments and tasks in Exchange so you can see and edit them in your favorite Exchange client--Outlook, Outlook Web App, or your mobile phone--even when you are offline.

Let us know in the comments what you think of the new Project and how you're putting it to work for you, as well as any tips or tricks you've learned along the way. And don't forget to follow our Project for Team Members blog feed!

Project for IT pros

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

We love Project IT Pros. Always in the trenches and getting their hands dirty with the latest technologies and improvements, IT Pros are the engine that keeps many project management offices running. With the release of the new Project, now there are new and improved ways for IT Pros to keep bolting infrastructure into place and tweaking performance levers to deliver high-quality capabilities to their organizations.

To help, we rounded up some of our most popular articles and organized them by common work responsibilities. Here, the focus is on IT Pros, with topics including OData integration, timesheet infrastructure improvements, and great new ways to use SharePoint Designer to deliver ever-better Demand Management solutions. IT Pros, we salute you!

OData. Project has something for everyone, and plenty for IT Pros. One thing we think is especially useful is the OData server reporting service we've built to retrieve data stored in your instance of PWA or Project Online.

Timesheet improvements. Project 2013 boasts a number of timesheet improvements for administrators and developers which add power to your ability to run projects and get data out of Project Online.

Demand Management. Initial proposals and project ideas are generally referred to as demands, and Demand Management is the process for collecting these demands. It's a complicated process, but it got a lot easier when we announced Demand Management with SharePoint Designer. Typical demand management phases are create, select, plan, and manage. The planning and management phases are accomplished by the more familiar project management processes by using Project Professional and Project Web App.

Let us know in the comments what you think of the new Project and how you're putting it to work for you, as well as any tips or tricks you've learned along the way. And don't forget to follow our Project for IT Pros blog feed!

The new Microsoft Project

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Ludovic Hauduc, General Manager of Microsoft Project

Last week Microsoft announced availability of the Office Customer Preview for public download. And right alongside it, we released a preview of the new Microsoft Project with two options to try out the latest release for yourself:

Sign up for the Project Online Preview with Project Pro for Office 365Download Project Professional 2013 Preview & Project Server 2013 Preview

I'm proud of the work the team has put into this release and today, I'm also excited to finally share the new Project with all of you.

Now you can quickly get a portfolio view of all your projects and resources, prioritize initiatives, and deliver on them by leveraging the familiarity of SharePoint. Project Online makes it easy and fast to get up and running on a full range of project portfolio management (PPM) capabilities including portfolio selection, workflow, resource capacity planning, dashboards, and more.

Project Web App (PWA)

We wanted to make it easy for users to start managing projects with Project Online. The new PWA comes equipped with visual tiles to guide you through important steps in managing your projects and get started quickly to make the most of the flexible PPM capabilities in Project.

Collaborate using familiar tools

Collaboration starts with SharePoint and with this release, integration between Project and SharePoint is even better. The ease of use of SharePoint allows team members to jump right in and update their task status via team sites. These team sites centralize your unique project management needs storing relevant documents and a dedicated OneNote notebook to capture critical project details. With improved social capabilities in SharePoint, working together has never been easier.

All of your tasks, across multiple projects, surface up under My Tasks in the SharePoint Newsfeed hub. More and more users rely on their mobile devices, and with improved Exchange integration, you can now see these project related tasks on your Windows Phone or iOS device.

Best of all, Project Online allows your team to connect to a web-based mobile team site to stay up-to-date from virtually anywhere.

Industry-leading PPM for any organization

We believe any organization should be able to take advantage of the benefits of PPM. In both Project Online and the new Project Server 2013, we make it easy to build and customize workflows tailored to the processes of your organization by leveraging the simplicity of both SharePoint Designer and Visio. Unlock the rich project and resource data to create dashboards for real-time. Any user familiar with Excel can easily connect to Project Online to build custom reports and dashboards that can be published to PWA in the new Business Intelligence Center, which comes equipped with several popular reports right out of the box.

Microsoft Project helps you easily collaborate with others to quickly start delivering winning projects. It's the only project management system designed to work seamlessly with other Microsoft applications and cloud services.

Get started quickly

Final draft is the industry leader of screenwriting software, used by many in show business and across the world. It's easy to use, and has powerful features to help format the script for you, giving you more time to focus on the story. It's a very popular screenwriting software program with excellent features and superb technical support, beating out Movie Magic Screenwriter and Movie Outline. Final Draft earns our toptenreviews gold award.

Ease of Use:

Final Draft is an easy-to-use screenwriting software app, and it's also easy to learn. Basically, the software will handle the Hollywood standard formatting for you through a series of keyboard commands.

For example, after typing in "Fade In" at the very beginning of your script, you will hit the return key. Hit it again and you're given options of what you'd like to do next, including the corresponding keyboard shortcut. We take a look at these functions and options below.

Writing & Rewriting Features: [G] General: Just a generalized formatting option. honestly, we never use it. [S] Scene Heading (or slug line): This is where you'll put the rental and general time of day, such as ext DOCTOR's HOUSE - MORNING. This means it's exterior, or outside of the doctor's house in the morning.[A] Action: This is where you'll type out brief descriptions of what's happening.[C] Character: the character name Formats for dialogue; Final Draft screenwriting software remembers them as you type them out, making it easy to just hit Enter after typing the first letter of a character's name.[P] Parenthetical: This lets you add extra instructions for actors, such as (yelling) or (with a coy smile), in the dialogue.[D] Dialogue: Will adjust to the proper format for writing dialogue.[T] Transition: Final Draft will allow the proper format for writing in transitions, which are occasional ways to move from scene to scene quickly when great lengths of time pass. For example, you can use the transition to move a scene involving a man going to sleep to waking up the next morning in a new sceneby using "To Dissolve"; This will tell the video editor to put a dissolve in between both scenes.[H] Shot: Will properly format where you'd put a brief camera description.[] Cast List: You can put this list of characters at the beginning of the script for casting purposes, so potential actors can see who to hearing for. It's not recommended you do this, unless the movie is actively casting actors for the roles.

This may seem a bit much, but really, you're mostly just hitting the Return key and either typing the keyboard shortcut ("A" for Action, etc.), or using other keyboard combinations, such as the Tab key to put in parentheticals for dialog description. You'll mostly be using the Scene Heading, Action, Character, Parenthetical and Dialogue options when writing.

These keyboard commands (tab and return) are common and universal with pretty much every screenwriting software on the market.

Not only that, but Final Draft screenwriting software expertly anticipates what you'll want to do next. If you just type in a scene heading and hit Return, the default option will be Action, to write a description of what's going on in the scene. From there, it will anticipate that you'll want to type in a character's name then dialogue and will give you those respective options.

The screenwriting software's SmartType feature will also remember the names of characters' locations, shots and more. This is yet another great feature that keeps you focused on writing the script, thus saving you plenty of time.

Trust us, this application really makes formatting a script to Hollywood's strict standards easy. You won't even have to think about your keyboard shortcuts as you focus on your story. You also won't be trying to remember how many times you need to hit the Tab button or the spacebar to format the scene headings, action, character's names and dialogue.

Other writing features include ScriptNotes, to write down ideas or give feedback; CollaboWriter, which allows writers to work together online and in real time; Writing Management, to see if you're meeting your screenwriting time goals; a spell-checker and thesaurus; and Panels System, which will put the script into either a Scene View (just the scene headings) or Index Cards (breaks down the script into index cards that can be printed) for easier viewing of the screenplay.

When the script is done, you can easily register it with the Writers Guild of America (WGA) to protect your story in case the idea is stolen. Other features include "Reports," which creates a cast list, the rentals and more. "text to Speech" allows your computer to read back the script, so users can hear how the dialogue and action sound out loud.

Do you ever have a bunch of different saved drafts, and you're not sure which is the latest one? We recommend using Script Compare to inspect the latest drafts to see which one has the most changes.

If your script is going into production as a film, you will likely have to do some rewrites. Final Draft screenwriting software has you covered. You can lock pages that don't need to be revised and change the color to the corresponding revision. During filming, the movie's cast and crew need to use color coding to keep track of new and revised script pages.

Now you probably won 't use every feature we listed, but it's great to know they're there if you do need them.

Multiple Format Export:

While Final Draft screenwriting software users don't need to worry about this, the app does support importing several non-screenwriting software formats, such as Word, Rich Text and more. You can also select File, "save As", and save the file in Rich Text, Plain Text, HTML and others.

When it comes to exporting, this screenwriting software is designed to work seamlessly with other apps. For example, you can export the script into compatible formats that can be imported and used to schedule the movie's shoot, and also with Avid professional video editing software, which makes it easier to edit and reference the script.

Templates:

There are also templates for writing "treatments" (a short, narrative summary of your screenplay), character biographies and more, to help you develop the story and characters. It's a well-rounded screenwriting software app.

If you're writing television commercials, corporate videos, training videos and the like, we recommend checking out Final Draft A/V, which is aimed at that style of writing.

The live chat is the best bet, since it's completely free, and if the problem can't be solved via chat, they'll call you for free to work it out.
