Join @Windows, @kristinalibby, and myself (@brandonleblanc) for the chat. To participate in the chat, just use our normal #winchathashtag. We look forward to seeing some of your new Start screens from Windows 8.1! I’m planning to share my Start screen but you’ll have to attend our chat to see it as I’m still finishing up making it look epic.

You’ve heard us (and me) talk a lot about the new features in Windows 8.1 since the Build conference last June but I think it’s worth reiterating the awesomeness that Windows 8.1 brings to your device.

Win8-1_3row_16x9_US

desktop

Start the way you want. The Start screen in Windows 8.1 is more customizable than ever with new tile sizes, new background designs and colors – allowing you to make the Start screen on your device unique and personal to you (you should see some of the color combinations I’ve come up with for my Start screen!). You can also choose how you start your Windows experience – at the Start screen or the desktop. The Start button is back. And there is an improved Apps view that allows you to see all your apps the way you want.

Split Screen Four Apps

Multi-tasking is even better in Windows 8.1 – you can now have up to four apps side by side with flexible windows sizing for each app on the screen. At a minimum, I usually have 3 apps snapped side by side on my devices doing various things like email, listening to music and browsing the web. We have also improved multi-monitor support in Windows 8.1 allowing users to view their desktop or apps from the Windows Store on any or all their monitors.

Bing Smart Search

Bing Smart Search is the easiest way to find what you are looking for and to get things done. Built for touch, swipe or type from the Start screen and Smart Search will find what you need – whether it’s a document on your PC, a photo album in the cloud, your favorite app, or a website.

Bing Health & Fitness Diet Tracker

Bing Food & Drink

Windows 8.1 comes with new and improved Microsoft apps and services – available right out of the box and right from your Start screen. Skype is there for instant messaging and catching up with friends and family. We’ve updated the Mail app (well, more like over-hauled) to make email easier – for both personal and email and work email. Two new Bing apps are introduced in Windows 8.1 called Food & Drink and Health & Fitness along with updates to the News, Weather, Finance, Travel and Sports apps. Xbox Music has received a big update for Windows 8.1, and you can watch TV and movies with Xbox Video. And Windows 8.1 comes with Internet Explorer 11which is optimized for touch and brings speed boosts and synchronized browsing history, favorites, and settings across all of your Windows 8.1 devices.

SkyDrive

Speaking of synchronizing – Windows 8.1 also comes with deep and improved cloud integration with SkyDrive. Your files are always accessible across all your devices. With SkyDrive smart files, you can create, edit, save and share files anywhere, anytime and your files are always with you, both on and offline.

Windows Store

And the Windows Store has been redesigned in Windows 8.1. With the “New & Rising” section it is now easier to stay on top of the hottest and newest apps to hit the Windows Store. Plus, the Windows Store has a live tile too! The Windows Store will also now provide you with personalized recommendations – powered by Bing. And apps are now updated from the Windows Store automatically by default so you will always have the best and newest versions of your apps. Look for new and updated apps including Adobe Photoshop Express, Box, Evernote, Facebook, Hulu Plus, Netflix, and NOOK, for Windows 8.1. And more to come!

Windows 8.1 will also bring some very innovative new devices for both consumers and businesses from tablets and 2-in-1s with a perfect mix of mobility and productivity, to new laptops, All-in-Ones and specialized industry devices Windows 8.1 brings the widest selection of designs at every price point. I’ll be blogging more about many of these devices over the next few weeks as they become available, so you can find and experience a device that is truly an extension of you.

Windows 8.1 represents collaboration across the entire company. Over the last three days, we’ve featured guest blog posts from our friends at Skype, Xbox, Bing, SkyDrive, and Internet Explorer that discusses in the connected experience that Windows 8.1 brings together.

And now you can enjoy the results of this work today. So get your device updated! And be sure to share those Start screens.

OneNote Jump Start recording available

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

JumpStartA couple of weeks ago, we did a live, 2-hour course on getting started in OneNote 2013. It was all about getting organized, taking notes, and sharing information. If you missed it, no worries, because the recording is now available here: http://aka.ms/OneJump.

After you sign in to the Microsoft Virtual Academy site, you can watch the videos and follow along at your own pace. You can also download the OneNote workbook we used in the session.

The course uses examples that are common in the IT field, but the stuff we teach will ring true for people in other industries as well. I mean let's face it: we are bombarded with gobs of information every day. And OneNote is a great way to collect, organize, and make sense of it all.

So watch the videos when you're ready. Or share them out at your company so that other people can learn the power of taking notes, sharing, and collaborating with OneNote.

Excel Web App - What's now available in a browser near you?

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

This blog post is brought to you by Dan Battagin, Group Program Manager for the Excel Web App team.

Greetings - I hope everyone's been enjoying the content on the blog over the last few releases, and that everyone's excited to see what's coming in the next version of Office, Excel, and the Excel Web App. Jane mentioned in her last post how we went about deciding what to invest in, and today I’ll share with you some of the broad investment areas for the browser-based versions of Excel.  Of course, all I expect that to do is whet your appetite – so in the coming months the team and I will take you through the details of some of the key changes/additions we've made.

As always - we'd love to get your feedback here or directly through the public beta that's available on SkyDrive or Office365. So without further ado, let's see what's on the topic list!

Performance. As with all of the Office Web Apps, on the Excel Web App team we are always talking about performance. We're always looking for ways to squeeze more performance out of the browser and bring the experience closer to the one you're used to with Excel itself. We've made some great strides this time that we'll tell you about, as well as some places where we will continue to improve the live service as you use it.

clip_image002

Features. Over the last couple of years, we've continued to add new features to Excel Web App on a regular basis - embedding and mash-ups, context menus, better sharing, printing, and more - but we've got a lot more that we waited until now to release. We'll talk through some of the awesomeness that is now available in the coming posts - including better charting, new types of slicers, QueryTable support, PivotTable editing, and much more.

A New Look and Feel (literally). Each release of Excel always brings an update to the visuals, and this release is no different. We've embraced a new, more minimalist design while maintaining the familiarity that people have come to rely on from version to version. The result is a crisp, clean, modern look that's sure to catch your eye. We've also taken the opportunity to optimize the look and interaction model on different devices – for instance, you'll get a more spacious (finger friendly) experience on tablet devices.

2012-07 Excel Web App Overview - New Look

Excel Everywhere. There's data all over the web, so now Excel is all over the web too! We've made improvements to embedding and are introducing two new ways to experience Excel in context of your everyday surfing:

Excel Button - Officially the Excel Interactive View, the Excel Button is similar to the Facebook Like button - when you see and click on an Excel Button, data on the page will automatically be presented in an interactive view complete with custom filters and charts, bringing the power of Excel to the Web. Learn more on ExcelMashup.com.

2012-07 Excel Web App Overview - Excel Button

Surveys - Ever wanted to collect data from a group of people directly into a spreadsheet? Now you can, easily, without them having to worry about where to enter the data because they are presented with a clean, simple, survey.

2012-07 Excel Web App Overview - Survey

Spreadsheet Compliance and Control. In June 2011 we acquired Prodiance, a leading spreadsheet compliance and control company. Since then, we've worked to integrate the functionality into Excel, Access, and SharePoint and we're extremely excited by the results. We'll walk you through the components in a series of posts, and I think you'll be excited as well.

2012-07 Excel Web App Overview - Spreadsheet Compare

More, Better APIs for Developers. Extensibility has always been a key aspect of Excel, and this release we've continued to invest in our APIs in ways that we think will bring Excel Web App into the powerhouse of today’s web developers. We've added support for Apps for Office - HTML5 and JavaScript based solutions that can be hosted as floating objects or task panes inside Excel Web App, as well as made significant improvements to our embedding, REST, and JavaScript APIs, enabling new mash-up scenarios that were never possible in the past, even in desktop Excel.

clip_image012

Whew, there’s a lot to cover in the next few months - but we're excited about it and will do our best to share that excitement through the blog. As I mentioned before, we want to hear what you think too - so please, leave your comments here or head on over to SkyDrive and opt in to the Web Apps Preview so you can give us your feedback there!

Photosmith, the Lightroom iPad companion, is now available

I’m very pleased to see that after much anticipation, Photosmith for iPad has been released. I haven’t yet had a chance to try it, but initial reactions seem enthusiastic. Rob Galbraith writes,

We’ve had the pleasure of using Photosmith during its beta period and it has already joined our list of must-have photography apps for Apple’s tablet. If you use Lightroom and own an iPad, we strongly recommend checking out Photosmith.

Tangent: I’ll kick the tires once I find my tablet’s Camera Connection Kit, which is… somewhere.  Apple must surely recognize the frailty of such a solution, and I’m waiting for them to do to it what the iPad 2's Smart Cover did to the original’s recycled-mousepad of a cover: enable incredibly easy pairing & transfer between devices (e.g. cameras, phones, and tablets).  Hints about AirDrop in Lion make me hopeful.
