Automatically plot multiple pieces of online data in your Excel spreadsheet

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

This post on exploring Webservice functions is brought to you by Lee Bizek, a Program Manager in the Excel Team.

Automatically plot multiple pieces of online data in your Excel spreadsheet If you’ve ever wanted to incorporate data from online resources into Excel spreadsheets, now you can with the new Webservice function. With this new feature, you can add information such as stock quotes, weather, Bing Search results or even Twitter feeds to your spreadsheets—and you can make the information update automatically. In this post, we'll discuss some of the more advanced aspects of the Webservice function.

I’m starting with a spreadsheet I created to organize a group camping trip that includes the latest weather information from the internet. In this example, being aware of online weather updates helped us to prepare for the elements and also predict high and low tides because we wanted to go crabbing as part of the adventure. I’ll show you how to take this spreadsheet a step further to use the =FILTERXML(xml, xpath) to extract multiple records of data from the XML string with an array. This will allow you to automatically plot multiple pieces of data in your spreadsheet.

Note: Before you start the exercise, be sure to review how to use Webservice functions to automatically update Excel 2013 spreadsheets with online data so that you know how to:

Use a =WEBSERVICE(url) function to get dataUse the =FILTERXML(xml, xpath) function to extract a single piece of data from the XML string

We’re going to set up a Webservice function call to the URL for the 10-day weather forecast and then pull out the details from the XML string. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Open the example file Kamping 2013 – Start and Complete Sample Files.zip located at the end of this post (click the icon next to Attachment).

2. Go to http://www.wunderground.com/weather/api/d/docs?d=data/forecast10day to get the URL for the 10-day forecast. At the bottom of the page, you’ll see an example URL.

3. Copy the example URL and paste it into your Webservice function in cell B11 of your spreadsheet. (Note: Be sure to replace the API key and location information in the URL to the cell reference we used to incorporate data from an external source so that you can control the API key and zip code for both Webservice functions in the same place.)

4. In your Excel spreadsheet, select cell range B14:B23.

5. Click the Formula Editor Box and then type:

=DATEVALUE(CONCATENATE(FILTERXML(B11, "//date//month"), "/", FILTERXML(B11, "//date//day")))

In this example, I am pulling out the month and day, CONCATENATING them together and then converting the string to a DATEVALUE.

6. Press CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER to execute the array. This action adds the brackets { } that indicate it is an array. Find more information about array formulas here.

7. Select cell range C14:C23, then type: =FILTERXML(B11, "//high//fahrenheit")

8. Press CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER for the high temperature.

9. Select cell range D14:D23, then type: =FILTERXML(B11, "//low//fahrenheit")

10. Press CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER for the low temperature.

11. Select cell range E14:E23, then type: =FILTERXML(B11, "//conditions")

12. Press CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER for the conditions.

Note: To edit the formula, select all of the cells in the array, then click the Formula Editor. Press CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER to execute the new formula.

WEBSERVICE Functions are “non-volatile”, which means they refresh only when:

A referenced cell is edited

The entire workbook is refreshed (CTRL + ALT + F9)

Some text strings include spaces or non-URL-friendly characters instead of URL-friendly characters such as a zip code. You can still use the URL in the WEBSERVICE function, but it’s best to encode the string first. Use the =ENCODEURL(text) function to include text searches into your WEBSERVICE function URL. Learn more about ENCODEURL function here.

Now we are better prepared for packing and planning our crabbing activities!

--Lee Bizek, Excel Program Manager

Download the full example file Kamping 2013 – Start and Complete Sample Files.zip attached below. The example file also utilizes the tide data and includes XPATH filters in the WEBSERVICE Functions. Remember you can use this functionality for many different web services to pull in data that you can then analyze using Excel.

To use the web service in this example, go to www.wunderground.com and register for their Weather API to get your own API key. Once you have your API key, add it to the Weather tab. All WSF calls in the file will use this cell reference in the URL.

Managing project schedules in Project Professional vs. Project Online / PWA

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Project Professional 2013 and Project Online / PWA are distinct tools which work together, empowering businesses to deliver winning projects while effectively executing and achieving strategic priorities. People across the organization regularly update statuses, manage resource allocations, report progress and balance strategic objectives. These people need different capabilities at different times.

Project Professional 2013 is the project manager's everyday workhorse. They can easily plan projects and collaborate with others from virtually anywhere, staying organized and keeping projects on track with the only project management system designed to work seamlessly with other Microsoft applications and cloud services.

Project Online and PWA for Project Server link the team together and allow everyone to manage everyday work and collaborate effectively. Management also uses Project Online or PWA to access powerful strategic tools like Project Portfolio Management (PPM).

One of the easiest ways to understand the differences in these tools is to look at their output. Project Professional gives project managers the ability to manage complex project plans and easily synthesize information to guide teams in the right direction and report progress to management. Out-of-the-box reports present project data in an easily consumable format. Each report can be easily customized in an Excel-like experience. Sharing is simple, since reports are optimized for copy/paste.

Most project managers use Project Professional 2013 for the many complex necessities of managing projects and Project Online / PWA when they are away and need to work with their projects. PWA is also ideal for team participants to update their everyday work and collaborate from virtually anywhere. The richness of Project Professional 2013 is seen below, with a few features highlighted to illustrate the unique capabilities of the desktop client.

The Team Planner is a particularly powerful tool within Project Professional 2013 which makes it easy for project managers to identify and resolve potential resource overallocations. Issues can be fixed with the click of a button as the scheduling engine automatically moves tasks to avoid schedule conflicts, or manually with drag and drop.

Another important set of distinctions between Project Professional and Project Online / PWA are the user interfaces and variety of views available to visualize and format project data. The web-based interface is ideal for access from virtually anywhere and works in most web browsers, and the Project Professional 2013 desktop client takes advantage of the extra power of the Windows environment to deliver a rich and immersive interface. Here we can see a sampling of additional views available only in Project Professional.

Use Web services to automatically update Excel spreadsheets with online data

This post on the research of Web service functions is brought to you by Lee Bizek, Program Manager on the Excel team.

Have you ever wish, data from online resources in your Excel spreadsheets, or even Twitter RSS feeds such as such as stock quotes, weather, Bing search results include? With new Web Services features, now you can.

I used to coordinate anonymous editing in Excel Web , which some people outdoors to sleep in tents required collaboration with a group, a 20-person camping trip. Aware online weather updates being helped to prepare for the elements and also make predictions because we crabbing as part of adventure wanted to go high and low tides.

With Excel-2013 for the desktop, we moved weather and tide information from the Internet to Excel using the =WEBSERVICE(url)--function and the most beautiful is automatically updated information!

Learn how to use the WebService function, we will do 2 things:

A =WEBSERVICE(url)-Funktion that use to get the DataUse = FILTERXML (XML, XPath) function to extract a piece of data from the XML string

First, find a Web service. In this example with weather updates, go to http://www.wunderground.com/weather/api to create your free account. Fill the form, and click sign up for an API key.

To set up your API key, follow these steps:

Select either the Cumulus to plan or the anvil plan, depending on what you prefer. Choose which option you prefer for the addon history. Works in this example since we no historical information use either option.Select Developer. Note: The other options also work for this example, but there is a fee, the associated with them.Click on Refresh plan.Click on the top of the page, documentation.Found on the left navigation bar, titled API table of contents of data features heading, then click under the heading conditions.(You can go also http://www.wunderground.com/weather/api/d/docs?d=data/conditions)Scroll to the bottom of the page, then copy the URL in the box shown examples. (The URL format will look like this: http://api.wunderground.com/api/[APIKey]/conditions/q/CA/San_Francisco.json). The example URL will contain your unique API key.

Now have a unique API key, open your Excel spreadsheet file and follow these steps create the =WEBSERVICE(url)-Funktion for the current weather conditions:

In cell B5, type = WebService(URL). Then, replace the URL with the unique URL, including your API key, which you have just copied. Both sides of the URL add quotation marks. The format will look like this: to replace, then at the end of the URL "http://api.wunderground.com/api/[APIKey]/conditions/q/CA/San_Francisco.json" country and the city in the URL with a zip code .xml to. The formula in cell B5 should look like this: =WEBSERVICE("http://api.wunderground.com/api/[APIKey]/conditions/[ZipCode].xml") [apischluessel] your will be unique API key, and the [ZIP code] for the desired location weather updates. Press enter or return. The formula returns an XML string from the Web service.

You can use also the cell references in the Web service function to URL parameter, such as your zip code, for example, to update.  Here's how to set it up:

Add your API key in cell B1. Enter in the name fieldapischluessel to the cell to name a few.  In cell B2, type the zip code. Type in the name ZipCode field to mention the cell. Create your WEB SERVICE function with cell references. ("The formula should be in this format: = WEBSERVICE("http://api.wunderground.com/api/ "& APIkey &"/ conditions/q/ZipCode & ".xml") copy and paste the entire formula in cell B5. Update your zip code and then you will see the update of your WEB SERVICE function URL.

Now we have the information from the Web service in the Excel spreadsheet, we need to extract the data, what, who want we from the XML, including the name of the city and current temperature and current weather. To extract the data, follow these steps:

1. The =FILTERXML(B5,"//full")-Funktion type cell B8. This will give you the city name is associated with the zip code.

2. Enter cell C8, = FILTERXML (B5, "//temp_f"), to extract the current temperature in Fahrenheit.

3. In cell D8, type = FILTERXML (B5, "/ / weather") to see the current weather conditions, such as light rain.

Our camping trip planning collaboration table looks now with the online weather updates:

Please keep in mind that WEB services are "non-volatile", which means that they only have to update:

A referenced cell is updated EditedThe entire workbook (CTRL + ALT + F9)

Remember that you can use this functionality for many different Web services over the Internet, which you can then analyze by using Excel.

Create your online brand with a combination of SharePoint-2013 and the Web technologies you already know

Rule 1, positie 8793.

This post is an introduction to how you can easily use the Design Manager alongside the web design tool you're most comfortable with to define your company's online brand using the strong content management capabilities system that is SharePoint 2013.

Branding with SharePointWith SharePoint 2013, you can brand your SharePoint publishing site using the web technologies you know, the tools you like, and the devices you want, making it easier than ever before to get started as a SharePoint designer or developer. And for current SharePoint pros, don't worry. The work you've put in learning SharePoint thus far is still very applicable and your knowledge of the SharePoint publishing page model is still incredibly useful.

This post provides on overview of how you can easily use the SharePoint 2013 Design Manager and device channels alongside the web design tool you're most comfortable with to define your company's brand online. While keeping the same page rendering infrastructure, we've made three major enhancements to how you brand a SharePoint publishing site.

SharePoint still maintains its master pages and page layouts in ASP.NET but now you can also design your master pages and page layouts in HTML, including using HTML markup of SharePoint controls. In the background, SharePoint creates the corresponding ASP.NET file that it wants but that you get to ignore.

In the past, you could use CSS and JavaScript to style your site, but now those are fully integrated into your SharePoint web development experience. We did a lot of work with HTML previewing so you can style the HTML directly rather than having to use the server to see it and if you do preview on the server, you can do so in the context of any SharePoint page of your choice!

Working in the web technologies you know doesn't stop at the page layout level. The content query Web to design in XSLT is still part that required you around, but the new content search Web part is an important building block for creating search-driven experiences in SharePoint of 2013?? making sure that there was a great designer experience to go along with it was very important for US, so it is customizable with JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.

Because we aren't assuming any SharePoint knowledge on your part, we have the Design Manager to help walk you through the of your publishing site branding. This design Manager provides a wizard-like experience to give you SharePoint development guidance side-by-side with entry points for you to view and work with your design files. Each of the steps also has its own documentation article on MSDN:

Customizing the design of your site is more than converting HTML into ASP.NET. To help you be successful in creating your site, popular placeholders are ready and waiting for your content. When it comes to page layout, we inserted all the page fields that are unique to the content type you choose-- this way, creating your SharePoint design files turns into a matter of editing and tweaking rather than creating.

With the snippet Gallery, you have a good starting point for adding SharePoint functionality to your site. For those of you familiar with previous versions of SharePoint, think of this as the set of controls that you'd access from SharePoint Designer-but a bit more than that. The snippet Gallery provides HTML version (including, in many cases, a static preview to show you what you're working with while you edit your file in something like Dreamweaver split view) components-of a set of common - including all Web part from the Web Part gallery. For each LCC, you get to tweak its properties and simply copy it into your HTML master page or page layout, and in the background, SharePoint turns it into the ASP.NET control it requires.

Figure 1. At the top of the page of the snippet Gallery is a ribbon of all the snippets. The body of the page has the snippet's description, properties and HTML code, plus a live preview. Every master page has the same snippet gallery, which is slightly different from that of page layout- and the snippet gallery of a page layout content type depends on its (because the page fields change).

People are no longer simply accessing your site with their mouse on their desktop or laptop. It is a multi-device world out there: tablets, phones, and surfaces, oh my! How do you create an experience for your users so that their screen size is best utilized? Optimized for touch-based devices? SharePoint 2013, device channels help you present your site in the way best suited to whatever device a visitor is browsing from. As the designer, you get to think about what the experience of your site should be on all different form factors, differentiated by user agent substring assigned to up to 10 different channels.

Each channel can target multiple devices. For example, you can have one channel for both Windows phones and iPhones because they are of similar screen size, and a separate channel for the iPad. You can use a different master page and CSS per channel, and you can also target content to particular channels, all while having the exact same URL (which is great for usability and search engine optimization).

By using the device channel infrastructure, you get the opportunity to use device channel Panel, which is a great asset for content targeting. Content that you put inside one of these panels is rendered only on the channels you specify based on server-side logic, which decreases the page load time and the number of bytes sent over the wire. Combining these panels with a responsive CSS design makes for a faster and more streamlined user experience. Rather than having different channels based on screen size as in the previous example, you could have an "iOS" substring-based channel that captures iPads, iPhones and iPad minis and sends a single master page that loads different CSS based on what screen resolution the device is. For example, if you were the Windows phone team, you could target iOS devices and create a panel to advertise Windows phone.

Figure 2 and Figure 3. Side-by-side design mockups of the browser and mobile experiences for a news site based on the cross-site collection publishing feature, using responsive CSS, device channel panels, and a display template that changes the appearance of content search Web part results based on device channels.

This post which at introduction to how you can easily define your company's online brand using the tools you're most comfortable with and SharePoint 2013's strong content-management system. To learn more, go check out all the content our documentation writers have written for you on MSDN. The articles build sites for SharePoint 2013, Overview of Design Manager in SharePoint 2013, and develop the site design in SharePoint 2013 are some great starting places. Happy designing!

PowerPoint 2013: Present a PowerPoint File Online

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

You want to meet in real time to create or refine a PowerPoint presentation, but often the people with whom you need to meet cannot be at the same place at the same time. With the growing usage of messaging and audio/video conferencing software, people are collaborating from multiple locations. Whether you’re a student who needs to finish a class project with your peers, a small business owner who wants to share a presentation with clients, or a family member sharing vacation photos in a slide show, we know it’s important for any PowerPoint user to be able to easily share and work together on their PowerPoint files.

We’ve improved the capabilities of the PowerPoint 2010 Broadcast Service, and we are calling this new service the Office Presentation Service. It’s a simple, rich sharing experience that gives the presenter confidence that their attendees are able to follow along, wherever they are in the presentation. By adding an interactive communication channel, such as IM or voice/video applications, you can create a complete real time collaboration experience. And it’s free for all Office 2013 customers to use; all you need is a Microsoft account and Microsoft Office 2013.

We wanted to create a natural experience, allowing you to easily transition from working on your presentation to sharing with others for comments, review, or collaboration. While working on your presentation, begin sharing by clicking File > Share > Present Online. From here, select Office Presentation Service and click Present Online.

PresentOnline1

To send your meeting invitation to attendees, select Copy Link to copy and paste the meeting hyperlink so others can access it, such as in a Skype chat window. Alternatively, you can select Send in Email to email the hyperlink using your email client or select Send in IM to send using your existing IM chat client.

PresentOnline2

When you are ready to start, click Start Presentation. When your attendees click the hyperlink, a browser window will open and the presentation will be displayed. They do not need to have PowerPoint or any other product installed on their computer.

Allowing you to focus on the content presented and be in control of the view were two goals we kept in mind while building these sharing features. We kept the experience as simple and natural as possible, so you can easily view and share your information with others. Here are a few new features we think you’ll enjoy.

The new Presenter View in PowerPoint 2013 is an amazing experience, and we’ve ensured you are able keep this experience when presenting via an Office Presentation Service presentation.

clip_image006

Playing videos during a meeting is an important feature we know customers will appreciate. When you share a presentation with an embedded video, everyone can watch the video together, and we’ve included media play controls so attendees can mute, pause, seek and play on their own.

clip_image008

Sometimes presenters want to distribute their file with meeting attendees and let everyone view the slides independently, like when classmates are working together on a class presentation. In the final Office 2013 version, it’s easy for you to share the presentation with everyone, or not. It’s up to you. To enable attendees to download the presentation and view the slides on their own, simply select the Enable remote viewers to download the presentation check box when starting the presentation.

PresentOnline3

Sometimes the presenter moves on to the next slide before everyone else has had a chance to read all the information presented. We’ve heard that feedback and have enabled everyone to independently view slides with the navigation arrows at the bottom of the slide, or using their keyboard. Doing this does not interrupt the presenter or change anyone else’s view.

clip_image011

When attendees are viewing the file independently, we’ve built two ways to alert them they are now viewing the content independently. Clicking the Follow Presenter button allows attendees to easily go back to the same slide the presenter is viewing.

PresentOnline4

Thanks for reading, and have fun trying out the new features when sharing a PowerPoint file!

A Word document to present online

You want to meet to write real time or to refine a Word document, but often those that you need to meet, can be at the same time in the same place is the people, not. People from several positions work together with the increasing use of messaging as well as audio / video conferencing software. No matter whether you have a student who would like to share a class project with your colleagues, to stop a small business owner that a contract with customer or a family member write a holiday letter with a person in another place, we know that it's important for each word user can easily share and collaborate on their documents.

We set out to a simple creation, rich experiences that gives the host the trust of your visitors are able to follow, wherever they are in the document are. By adding an interactive communication channel, such as chat or voice / video applications, create a complete real time cooperation experience. Presentation is free of charge for all Office Office 2013 customers use; All you need is an account from Microsoft and Microsoft Office 2013.

We wanted a nature experience to create, to share with others working on the document for comments, review or collaboration. While working on the document, start free by click file > share > available online. From here Office presentation service click and available online.

To your meeting request to the participants to send, select Copy Link copy and paste make the link, so that others, as for example in a Skype chat window can access. Alternatively, you can send in E-Mail on e-Mail link select your email client or use your existing IM chat client to send send IN the .

When you are ready to begin, click Start presentation. When your visitors click on the link, it opens a browser window and the document is displayed. You must have installed on your computer not Word, or any other product.

So on the content focus shown and control of your view were two goals, we keep in mind during the creation of our products. We thought so easy and of course the experience as possible, so that you easily display and share your information with others. Here are a few new features that we think that you have lots of fun.

Sometimes moving the leader on, before all other a chance, could read all presented content. This feedback, we have heard and have each independently activated reading through the document with their mouse, keyboard or touch. In this way do not interrupt the moderator or someone else change the view.

If participants independently look at the document, we have three options, they warn that they display the contents are independent of each other. A temporary warning informs participants that they are not more to the moderator. The status bar at the bottom of the Word file informed participants, they no longer follow the leader, and this text will remain as long as participants view content independently of each other. Finally the following presenter button in the top toolbar is enabled and participants click this button allows easily at the same location to return the moderator introduces.

While meeting participants show a document together, sometimes minor edits or typo found such as correcting the spelling of someone's name, or change a set will be to better understand. To help with this simple processing scenarios, we have included an edit that quickly make moderator changes and update the document for participants allowed.

Example: The best places to stay in Estes Park Colorado

3. This - with the help of humor and creativity to entertain your audience. (Note: this is the type of video that has a largertential po to go viral on the internet)

Example: A spontaneous capture of your poodle to the toilet.

Once you have determine what type of video you want to create, then you must determine how you will record it. If you will demonstrate something on your screen and computer then you will need software like Camtasia screen capture. You can also use a program to grab free screen and create a slide show of images with Windows Movie Maker or other free video editing program.

If you want to create a review of travel or capture one-time action then you will have a real camera any. You can use a video enabled cell phone, a simple flip camcorder or video camera all over the place. Small cameras produce amazing quality and are convenient to carry around you. They are also very good markets. The fall is that they often produce high-quality audio. You can use a microphone to help solve this problem.

However, more expensive video cameras usually produce much better quality and sound and are recommended for a more professional finished product. The type of camera you choose will depend on the subject of your video (pleasure or business) and that you may already have on hand. You want your final film as high quality as possible. This will limit the amount of editing, you have to do.

To improve the quality of the video, make sure that it is filmed with good lighting and limit the amount of background noise to the audio is clear.

Once you have your video recorded if a screen capture or action film, it may need to clean up a little. You want that your high quality video as possible to keep your viewers watch at the end. If there is a lot of errors in a video tutorial or long breaks in an video action, that you may lose your viewers at this time there. You can perform tasks with software such as Windows Movie Maker for simple video editing. Most Windows and Mac computers are built with editing software. And as if by chance it, there are some great video tutorials on YouTube that show you how to use this software.
