VLOOKUP Tutorial: Updating prices in a master price list

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

In honor of VLOOKUP Week, MVP Bill Jelen has created a VLOOKUP tutorial for those of you who have a basic working knowledge of Excel but want to improve your skills. This tutorial assumes you know a little something about writing basic formulas in Excel. It assumes that you've heard of VLOOKUP and its benefits, but that you don't really know how to use it. Bill uses the example of updating prices in a product list to explore the following topics:

Part 1:  The Problem: It's taking way too long to find and update prices in a master price list

Part 2: The Solution: Using VLOOKUP to automatically update the price list

Suppose that you maintain an Excel workbook with over 10,000 prices for products that your company sells. Parts are arranged in sections by category. You have part numbers in column A, prices in column B, and other information in column C. Now, imagine that your manager just gave you a worksheet with updates for 475 of the items in your list.

Attempt 1: Using CTRL + F to update the list

You decide to copy the price update to a blank section of your master price list.

From this point, you start trying to find each item from the new list in the old list. Since the items in the old list are not sorted and cannot easily be sorted across the various sections of the price list, you decide to use the Find command to make the process easier.

Here is your first attempt:

Select the first part number from the new list in cell G3Press Ctrl+C to copy this item to the clipboardSelect all of column A by clicking on the A headingPress Ctrl+F to open the Find dialogPress Ctrl+V to paste the part number into the Find dialogClick the Find button

You are now at row 2063 and fairly proud that you didn't have to click PgDn one hundred times to get here. Unfortunately, you've forgotten the new price so you have to start over.

Watch me try using CTRL + F to update the list:

Attempt 2: Using Find All to update the list

You try jotting the new price on a sheet of scrap paper, but then you think there might be a faster way. After some experimenting, you end up with this awesome set of steps:

Select the next part number from the new list (you are down to G9) by now.Press Ctrl+C to copy that cell to the clipboardPress Ctrl+A twice to select all cells in the worksheetPress Ctrl+F to open the Find dialogPress Ctrl+V to paste the part number in the Find dialogPress Alt+A to Find All! This brings up a list of both the item in the original list and the item in the new listSwitch between the two cells using the up and down arrow keys.At this point, it is probably easier to switch to the mouse. Click on the new price. Right-click and choose Copy. Click on the old price. Right-click and choose paste. You can return to the right section of the new price list using the hyperlinks in the still-open Find dialog.

Watch me using Find All to update the list:

Even with this improved set of steps, it is taking almost 1 minute per item. You do some quick math and realize that 450 items are going to require 8 mind-numbing hours. Your first thought might be, "There has to be a better way, but what is it?"

I began working as a financial analyst in 1989. I've learned that data is rarely perfect.

This price list workbook is a case in point. It has been handed down in your department for the last dozen years. It was set up by some guy named Bob who no longer works here. In the workbook, there are lots of things that would have made life easier.

For example, it would have been nice if:

The category information was in another column, so you could easily sort the list by part number and then back by category. The list of new prices included all the items where the price did not change, and if it was in the exact same order as your list, so you could copy and paste huge ranges of prices.Your manager would have just done this himself.

But, in real life, data is not perfect. When data is not perfect, knowing an Excel function called VLOOKUP can save the day.

VLOOKUP formula explained

VLOOKUP stands for "Vertical Lookup." The vertical means that your list of new prices is going down the spreadsheet instead of across. (If you are wondering, there is an HLOOKUP for when your lookup table is going across.)

The tooltip for VLOOKUP says you need:

=VLOOKUP(lookup_value,table_array,col_index_number,[range_lookup])

Lookup_value is the part number that you are looking up. To find a new price for the part number in A2, you are looking for A2. =VLOOKUP(A2,Table_array is the lookup table. The data that you are looking to match must be in the first column of the lookup table. That works in this case, because part number is in column G and new price is in column H. If those had been reversed, you would copy the prices so they are to the right of the part numbers. When you type the address of the table, make sure to use dollar signs so that the table reference doesn't change as you copy the formula down your worksheet. Instead of G3:H477, use $G$3:$H$477. Those dollar signs tell Excel to not lower the range as the formula gets copied down. =VLOOKUP(A2,$G$3:$H$477,Col_index_number tells Excel which column you want to return from the lookup table. In this case, you only have two columns. Part number is in the first column of the lookup table. New Price is in the second column of the lookup table. Since you want to return New Price, use 2 for the column. =VLOOKUP(A2,$G$3:$H$477,2Range_lookup - the square brackets in the tooltip say that this argument is optional, but in real life it is not optional! You should always put False as the fourth argument. If you leave the argument off, you are allowing Excel to find close matches. Close matches are never appropriate when you are doing the type of lookup described in this situation. =VLOOKUP(A2,$G$3:$H$477,2,False)

Add a new column to your price list called New Price. Enter =VLOOKUP(A2,$G$3:$H$477,2,False) in cell C5. You get the new price. This looks promising!

Your first VLOOKUP returns the new price

Select the formula in C5 and double-click the fill handle to copy the formula down. (The fill handle is the square dot in the bottom right corner of the selected cell.) Because of the blank cells between categories, the fill handle will only copy the formula down to the end of the first category. Already, you can see that something seems to be wrong.

Uh-oh! #N/A errors are usually bad, but maybe not in this case

Techniques for dealing with inevitable #N/A errors

A few of the VLOOKUP formulas are returning numbers. Many more are returning the #N/A error. When you do a VLOOKUP, the #N/A error means that the value you are looking up is not found in the lookup table. In this case, this is to be expected, since only 475 of the 10,000 prices are being updated.

Since you are expecting the #N/A errors, you can use the IFERROR function (available in Excel 2007 or later) to replace the #N/A with something else. You might put a space. You might put a zero. Or...in this case, if you don't have a new price, then the old price is still valid, so you could put the old price!

Edit the original formula in C5. Here are the three formulas you could use:

To show a blank, use =IFERROR(VLOOKUP(A5,$G$3:$H$477,2,FALSE),"")To show a zero, use =IFERROR(VLOOKUP(A5,$G$3:$H$477,2,FALSE),0)To use the old price, use =IFERROR(VLOOKUP(A5,$G$3:$H$477,2,FALSE),B5)

Choose a formula and copy it down. Your new column shows the new price if there is one, and the old price if there isn't one.

 =IFERROR() to the rescue

In this video, see how I define VLOOKUP and explain the VLOOKUP formula, and get rid of #N/A:

Come back tomorrow for Part II, where you'll how to use conditional formatting to highlight the items with new prices, and more...

Smoke photography - tutorial step by step how

Translate Request has too much data
Parameter name: request
Translate Request has too much data
Parameter name: request

Smoke photography can be extremely frustrating yet fulfilling at the same time. It all depends on how you approach the subject. If you have spare time and/or stuck indoors on a rainy day, then it's the perfect opportunity to try this technique. There is no need for expensive camera equipment. Just your camera, flash and a few household products will do the job.

All you need is a basic understanding of the relationship between the subject, lighting and background. The one vital ingredient that I would say is a must is PATIENCE! Oh, and a camera of course... Without those two things, you will walk away very stressed.

There is no right or wrong way to achieve the perfect smoke trail. I used a mixture of my own method as well as techniques I picked up from others. The idea is to experiment and use whatever process you are comfortable with. You may even find a better way to do it. The important thing is that you get the perfect picture.

In this tutorial, I will guide you through the entire shoot step-by-step. I will also offer my own ideas so you can try different techniques.

Ok, let's begin...

STEP 1

Have the right equipment

Besides the camera and flash, you can improvise with almost everything else. I will be making suggestions during the tutorial so don't panic if you are missing some items.

The basic equipment you will need is:

Camera - with control over shooting mode. Preferably a DSLR so you can manually adjust the shutter speed, aperture and focus.

Off camera Flash or Strobe with Snoot - don't worry if you don't have a snoot. I made mine with a cereal box and some black art paper:-)

Incense stick and holder - Incense sticks are the best source of smoke as they have a pleasant smell and provide a longer lasting continuous plume of smoke. If you don't have a proper holder, you can use anything from play dough to a potato. As long as it holds the incense in place, it doesn't matter what you use. You might also want to use something to catch the ash.

Black background and surface - You can use any dark coloured non-reflective background, but black is best if you want to capture perfect contrast and details of the smoke. You will also avoid lengthy post processing in Photoshop. Use paper, card or even velvet if you don't have a proper colorama background. The black surface is not vital but helps to avoid any stray light bouncing off onto the background or the camera lens.

Tripod - This is not entirely necessary, but for this tutorial, we will use one. I took all my smoke photos handheld. It's a little more difficult but you get some unique shots. Experiment with both methods and see which is best for you.

Reflector - This is optional if you want to reflect more light onto the smoke.

Portable light - A torch or something to light up the smoke so you can lock focus...and see where you're going in the dark...

A well-ventilated room - This is very important. Do not try it in a small room with just one small window! The smoke will fill a large room within 10-15mins so you will need to air the room out from time to time. This is because the smoke in the room will decrease the quality of your photo. Oh, and it's not good for your health to breathe in all that smoke, even if it does smell good.

A lighter - you have to light the incense...:-)

PATIENCE! Lots of it!

STEP 2

The Studio Set Up

Now that you got all your gear, you will need to set them up in a way that will prevent any light spilling onto the black background or into your camera lens. I have included images below to illustrate the set up I use. The first image is the basic set up.

Put up your black background

Place the incense stick about 3-4ft away from the background

Place the flash/strobe to the right (or left) of the incense about 1-2ft away

If using a reflector, place it on the opposite side, facing directly at the incense stick

Place the camera on a tripod in front of the incense about 2-3ft away

You can also arrange the equipment at an angle to the background (fig.2) just make sure that you avoid any light reflecting onto the background. This is important because smoke has a natural grey colour so you need a pure black background to give it contrast. You also need to make sure that when you fire the flash, no light hits the camera lens. This will create glare in your picture. It is not entirely a bad thing as you can still turn it into a creative image, but you don't want glare on all your photos.

This is an image with glare (please view on my blog). It was a mistake and my intention was to remove it, but I liked the solar effect it was giving so decided to leave it as it is.

STEP 3

Camera and Flash Settings

In order to capture a decent smoke photograph you need to remember four important factors that need to be adhered to,

Fast shutter speed - because it is constantly moving, you need to catch the motion of the smoke

Small aperture - for a greater depth of field. Smoke is unpredictable so setting a small aperture allows you to capture more of it in case of sudden changes in shape.

Low ISO - This is because smoke will naturally show up on a photograph as grainy. A higher ISO will make this worse

Light - You need lots of it. With a combination of fast shutter speed, small aperture and low ISO, there is not enough light to expose the shot. Therefore, the smoke will need to be lit up appropriately.

With all that in mind, set your camera accordingly based on its capabilities.

As guidance, below are the settings I used with my Nikon D300 and a Nikon SB-900 Speedlight:

Camera mode - Manual

Shutter Speed - 1/250

Aperture - between f/8 - f/16

ISO - 100 (or lower if your camera allows it)

Manual focus

White Balance - Auto or Flash

Focal length - This is your choice depending on how close you want to get to the smoke.

Flash output should be set at half power or above. Adjust according to your preference.

Ideally, you should use a flash or strobe that you can trigger remotely. However, you can connect the flash directly to your camera with a sync cord. Just be careful not to trip over it in the dark.

You also need to channel as much light onto the smoke as possible. This is when a snoot or barn doors come in useful. If you don't have either of these, use some card and secure it around the edge of the flash or strobe. Make sure the card extends out by about 2-3 inches.

STEP 4

Taking the shot

Now that you have everything in place, you need to ensure that all doors and windows are closed. Smoke is very delicate, so the slightest draught will disturb it and create thin unstable plumes, which you will find difficult to capture in detail. The room needs to be perfectly still.

Next, light the incense stick. If you want thicker and unique swirls of smoke then I would suggest lighting up two incense sticks and placing them in the same holder together. Now, turn off your camera's auto-focus feature, as it will not help at all.

The smoke will be constantly moving and once the lights are turned off, it will struggle to find a focal point. Watch the smoke to see where it goes and manually focus on where you think the smoke will end up when you release the shutter. I would suggest focusing on the part just 2-3cm above the tip of the incense stick. If you need to, use the torch to light up the smoke so you can adjust the focus accurately.

Once done grab your torch and switch off all the lights in the room. Although, in my opinion, it doesn't really matter if you shoot with the lights on or off, but for best results it is good to shoot in a darkened room to avoid any ambient light reducing the contrast.

Take some test shot's to check the exposure and adjust the settings accordingly. The idea is to get the background underexposed to a pure black (RGB 0, 0, 0) and the brightest part of the smoke should be white. When you're happy with the exposure settings, its time to get creative and start shooting!

When photographing smoke, I aim to capture smooth shapes and swirls in perfect detail and from different angles. All the smoke images you see in my gallery were taken without a tripod. I got in close to the smoke and moved around it to capture a different perspective.

You can try the same if you get bored with standard smoke swirls. You can even alter the transition of the smoke to create different shapes by placing a spoon, or any other object, above the incense stick. Also, try gently wafting the smoke to get different patterns.

And don't forget, ventilate the room every 10-15mins. The build up of smoke will create a grey haze that will deprive your picture of light and contrast. It is also very uncomfortable to work in a room full of smoke no matter how rosy it smells...

Final Thought

As I said at the start of this tutorial, there is no standard or "correct" way to photograph smoke. It's all about experimenting and finding your own technique. You may end up taking hundreds of photos and keeping just a fraction of them, don't let that put you off. Smoke is an unpredictable subject to shoot, and with the settings required to capture it, it is hard to get it right every shot. It's all about trial and error.

That's all there is to it...

How to uninstall Adobe Flash Player - working tutorial to remove your PC of Adobe Flash Player.

The Adobe Flash Player program is an important component of the Adobe Systems Group which focuses on the creation of multimedia software. Adobe has created popular programs such as Dreamweaver and Photoshop that was greatly helpful in improving the quality of images and photos. But as soon as users attempt to delete this application of the computer, many problems may occur. Some files that come with the program may be damaged or corrupted, will therefore very likely be left in your system because they can not be uninstalled correctly.

How to uninstall Adobe Flash Player.

There are two different ways to uninstall Adobe Flash Player, and it is the manual method or the automatic technique.

To manually remove the program, you must follow these steps:

Select "Start", click "Control Panel".
After the charge control panel, go to "Add & remove programs" or "uninstall a program" If your system is Windows Vista & 7.
This process will allow the applet add & remove programs appear.
From there, choose the program which must be deleted by the count of the list.
Proceed by clicking "delete". Instructions will be displayed on your screen and you will need to follow the specified actions to remove the program that you have selected to remove.
Using the program add & remove by removing applications does not fully take the program.

Some files will be lefttentIME, called "remnants of files". These files must be deleted from your computer by pressing "Start" and then find "my computer". Then, you need to select "C:\Program files\" and then find the remains of files. After you locate the files, click the folder and hit the keys "SHIFT + DELETE" on your keyboard. Restart your computer to complete the process.

Method of automatic deletion (recommended)

For people who are not computer knowledgeable and who think that the manual process is complicated, then this second method may be a good option. In fact, automatic method is one that is strongly suggested, so that you can use as it will remove not only the program, as in the case of Adobe Flash Player, but also completely remove all components and other programs of leftovers from your system. With this method, an automated tool is used; software more trustworthy for this method is the "Final uninstaller program. To use this tool, you can start by download final uninstaller. You must install on your computer and then clicking "Scan". A list of programs will be displayed and you must choose "Adobe Flash player". Check the box on the left side and select "Clean". Once the measures are carried out correctly, Adobe Flash Player will be removed from your PC.

The last but very important step is to clean the registry. The registry is a huge database where all the vital files, settings & options and the information is stored - including the remnants of files that may have been left if you used the manual method. ThetentIME registry is damaged, corrupted or infected, causing Windows to be unable to read the necessary files, it must function effectively. Problems and errors occur. To prevent this from occurring you can download and run a registry cleanup tool. In this way, you can be sure to resolve all the problems and errors on your computer and to avoid future issues.

You can Uninstall Adobe Flash from your PC using the tutorial and tools on our Web site. You can click here to remove Adobe Flash Player for your PC for good.

After effects Animation Tutorial - Assistants and layers

Alongside the basics of animation that are easy to implement in After Effects, "wizards" are provided to help you the next step in the development of your animation. It is the ideal time to learn and begin to implement layers too.

The layers are just what they sound like and if you use other graphic products such as Photoshop or Fireworks, you'll be familiar with the concept of the layer. Layers allow you to place different objects in your scene, on their own "layer".

This gives you the freedom to treat differently, to give these different actors of their own personality. We believe that provide a background color or a parameter for your stage backdrops and mattes. The action of your animation may well involve the different actors.

Even a simple logo unfolding on stage may play with a waterfall or Sunrise, a motorcycle zoom in the center of the stage or instructor in your tutorial to address the audience. All of these "players" will be put on their own layer and each layer has its own definition, including what is perhaps the most fundamental, and this is where it appears on the timeline, where this object enters your animation.

Because we are mixing layers and assistants in this tutorial we are going back to wizards for a moment. We have learned about the wizard of motion sketch, in our last article how to register the movement and animation of your object by simply followed the path as you would on a piece of paper. This method is very easy to use, very easy to visualize, but it lacks a bit of finesse. This is where appear the two assistants: the "smoother" and "auto-orient".

The ' softness ', as it's name implies, adjusts the speed and distance of the keyframes that you created by tracing with motion sketch. " In the same way, it is virtually impossible to hold your camera still perfectly when you take a photo, it is almost impossible to draw a path without a bit of hand movement "gittery." Once you have designed and reviewed your sketch of query, choose the more smooth, under window > smoother. Select all your images position key simply by selecting the position under your animated objects property and click "apply" under the smoother options. That's all. You will see the number of keyframes reduced and your path will be "smoothed". If you increase the tolerance on the smoother, it will help further reduce the number of key frames. Like most settings in After Effects, the best way to determine what works best for you and this particular animation is to try some different parameters. Play with it a little bit and then run your movie and observe how this wizard refined your animation.

Another wizard who belongs to this lesson is the wizard rotation auto-orient. It is also a fairly intuitive tool. Imagine a bird or a plane, a cruise along a winding road car. Animate the motion would only seem comic if your car was not always directed along the path. Auto-Orient (choose layer > transform > Auto-Orient) offer an "Orient long path" option that will keep your object aligned on the front movement. Your car will be appear to be oriented along the path, it follows, as your bird or airplane.

These simple wizards help your refine your animation, save you time and help to create a control that would be very difficult to create manually by setting each keyframe yourself. Experience with animation assistants and you will appreciate their ease of use and simple contributions.

Next? We will learn more about layers!

HDR tutorial

Welcome to the world of HDR photography. HDR is not appropriate for all images, but is very effective to bring out the highlights and shadows in an image.

To process an HDR image using this tutorial, you will need Photoshop (or similar) Edition software and Photomatix (or similar) HDR software.

1. Take several images of the same scene

To achieve a HDR look, you will need at least 3 images:

Underexposed

Normal exposure

Overexposed

Ideally to begin with you should have an image of the exhibition-2, a statement correctly and one exposure of + 2.

2. The images in Photomatix merge of

Open Photomatix and choose Generate of Image HDR.

Choose your three jpeg or RAW files and press OK.

A new window will appear with options to align the images, reduce noise and to attempt to match all mobile - choose accordingly for your image. Press OK.

A version merged image will appear which seems highly unrealistic - it is because standard monitors cannot display all the details correctly, and therefore we need to continue your map image.

3 Tonemapping

After having pressed the Tonemapping button next to the merged image, a new more realistic image will appear with many options. This is where you can change the image to your favorite look.

Photomatix will automatically return the default setting, there also some predefined settings and the option to save your settings for future use (once you get the freezing it!).

These are the available parameters:

Force: this is the final appearance of the image key, a high setting will increase the "cartoon" look

Saturation of the color: stimulate the dynamism of colors throughout the image.

Brightness: a senior will stimulate the shadows and clarify the overall picture

Microcontrast: increase the contrast on the image details.

Smoothing: this is the final appearance of the image key, adjust to change the range of highlights and shadows dynamic how appears. Avoid setting this high definition where the image can look extremely realistic. Adapt to your taste

Black and white and gamma points: adjust these according to the histogram to ensure it meets the two sides all also in the chart

Temperature: increase or decrease in the overall temperature of the image.

Saturation facts highlights/shadows: increase or decrease the saturation of the shadow/highlights as the saturation point you set earlier for the image

Micro-smoothing: reduces the noise be but be careful to not lose all the details!

Facts highlights/shadows smoothing: increase this bring some facts highlights/shadows in the image, especially useful when keeping a natural look to the sky in an image

Shadows clipping: adjust the amount of shade is truncated, move with care reduce noise in the shadows

When you are happy with the appearance of the image of press process, and then save the image that appears

4. The ghosts of masking and keep a natural appearance

Finally, open Photoshop or similar software, and open your tonemapped HDR image.

Add one or more images of original exhibition as new layers in the file and use layer masks to allow original areas show through. For example if the blue of the sky on your original image has been perfect, use a layer mask and the mask brush on the HDR, allowing the blue sky perfect in the original photo coming through this area.

It is also particularly useful for HDR images with movement, for example the trees blowing in the breeze between your original images, or people.

For examples of HDR image online search, it's a massively expanding of the photograph area, and there are some beautiful to see work.

Now imagine that I walk you through some steps, the advantages that Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Elements can do for you in these situations, and just how easy it is.

They say that the eyes are the Windows to the soul... So lets start by transforming one of the most important features on our face.

Before you begin, select the image you want to work.

Click file in the menu bar, click Open and navigate to the image that you want to use.

1. Select the white of the eyes.

2 Zoom on one eye.

Click on the icon for the tool box that looks like a magnifying glass.

3. In the Toolbox, click on the lasso icon and select the polygonal lasso.

4. Using the polygonal lasso, click into the white of the eye, leaving to the iris.

5 Holding the SHIFT key make your cursor across the iris and to do the same.

Photoshop Elements 8 - Healing Brush tutorial

There is nothing worse than a day of bad skin, especially when these "bad day peak skin" is being marked and shared across the internet! In this "healing brush" tutorial I introduce you to the art of the application, digital Foundation!

Let me take you by the techniques that uses Adobe Photoshop Elements & "Brush Away stains" and remove an unsightly spot, mole or a bud just should not be there!

Introducing the "Healing Brush".

In the Toolbox1. Click on the healing brush.

It's the icon who kinda resembles a symbolic or plaster.

Make sure that you do not click the "Spot Healing Brush".

2. Zoom as tight as possible on your image.

It pays to have an image high resolution to work with, this makes it easier to work on the finer details of the skin.

Before you continue...

3. Go to window in Photoshop and select 'Layers' in the menu dropdown. This action brings to the Commission.

You can separate the layers panel by dragging on the main screen and the wharf closure. You can drag and position it wherever appropriate.

With our background in place layer, we now create a new layer above the background layer.

4. Click the 'create layer icon'.

This is the icon that is located on the left of the "black half, half white circle" at the top in the elements and is down the bottom of the Panel in the full Photoshop.

5. "Layer 1" will now appear above bottom. Double click on layer 1 and you can rename what you choose, but in this example, we will rename-healing.

A good idea is to name your layers the name of the edition which is done. This makes just the things easier for the referencing.

6. Now click on the icon 'Healing Brush' of the Toolbox.

7. By using the keys on your keyboard hook, you can adjust the size of the brush.

By clicking on the left hook reduces the brush size key. We want the brush to be about the same size or slightly larger than the stain.

8. Pressed the ALT key then you click on an own close area of the stain. Releasing the Alt key to return back and brush on the spots. He spent as if by magic!

If you find this function does not, make sure that 'All the layers' is checked in the options bar and try again.

9. Holding down the right scroll bar of the image area erase all those unwanted stains!

Your done!

Until where go us with the editing is completely to the individual user. Some people may want to keep this beauty spot which adds characters to their appearance or the mole that makes you, you. It is a wonderful tool. In my next tutorial on Airbrushing , I'll show you how to brush away other imperfections on the skin, as too much glare or shine on the front.

Tutorial Photoshop - separation of colors for screen printing

If you are new to screen printing, can you do not know where to begin when it comes to getting ready artwork for printing. Separate the color images is an important step. Fortunately Photoshop is easy enough. I will show you how in a few easy steps.

Open the image in Photoshop. Now, select the magic wand tool in the tools Panel. Use this tool to select all of color in the image. If you need to select more of a field, hold the SHIFT key pressed, you click on the image. You will see "dancing ants" around the selected areas. If you click the wrong box, simply press Ctrl + Z to undo the last move, or click right and select subtract from the selection. Once you have made your selection, click right and select Layer via copy. This will create a new layer with just the color of an inside.

If you look at the layers Panel now you will see two layers. Disable the icon of the eye next to layer 1 to hide the layer. You should be able to see just the color that you selected on the left in the image. I will change the name of this layer of colour it by double clicking on the name and the replacement text.

If everything looks good, click the space where the eye icon was to reappear as layer 1. Follow the steps in the selection of a color and the overlay via copy again until all the colours are represented in their own layers. Whenever you select a new color of overlay, you will need to make sure that layer 1 is active. You can tell because this layer will be highlighted in blue in the layers panel. Layer 1 should be active because it is where all the colours originally reside. If a different layer is then active when you try to use the magic wand tool to select a color, it does not work correctly because the color you select is not present in the active layer.

The colors have the finer details are a little more complicated than the other layers. It is a good idea to zoom in when you select small areas to make sure that you don't miss anything. Also, if I use the magic wand to select small characters like the TM next to the logo it will probably not consider crisp when screen printing. Instead of selecting this area with the magic wand, create a new layer and use the text tool to rewrite TM. Write TM black and move the TM to the correct location on the image. Use a different color that the TM was written in, so it is easy to see if the police is the right size, etc.

Now hide all layers in the layers Panel except the TM layer and the layer that contains the same color that you want to Mt to be printed in. Click the right button in the layers panel, and then select Merge Visible. The two layers are now together in a single layer.

You will need to create registration marks now so the layers are easy to align when printing. Use a thin font such as Arial and write the + sign in black in three corners of the image. Use a font size that is easy to see, but not too thick or it will be difficult to align. The registration of marks must be far the image that they do not interfere with printing, but near the image always enough. When you print a few logos, you will get a feeling to learn how to create and place these marks.

Now select one of the layers. On the file menu, click Image > adjustments > levels. The levels options window will appear. Under output levels: there is a black and white bar with two arrows below. Click the white arrow and drag it to the left end of the bar. This will transform the black layer.

This with each layer so that each layer is black. You are now ready to print. You want to print each layer separately colored in black with the registration of marks on each impression. Printing good luck!

Color matching with Photoshop - a tutorial

A client of the customer of mine wanted to see how a pair of shorts basketball examined with a special Jersey. The only problem is that we did not have the jersey and shorts on hand in the same color. Instead of losing time and money the color appropriate to our main Office of mailing, we took a photo with mismatching colours (the Jersey was blue royal and shorts were scarlet) and change the color of the Jersey in Photoshop to match the short films. I'll show you how to replace and match the colors in images you can use this awesome tool yourself.

Open the image in Photoshop. Save this image and give it a new name, and then open again the original image. You should now have two copies of the original image open. First, we will work with the copy that does not have any change of colour. We are going to call this image, the Image Source. Select as much as possible of the object whose color is copied using a selection tool. You can use the magic wand, Lasso, or another selection tool. I used the magnetic Lasso to make my choices. I clicked on the main section of short films to get as much red as I could. As you can see, it is not necessary to select all of the object for which you are transferring the color, but you do not want to get the full color spectum, therefore the new color will be accurate.

Return now to the other image. This is the image that you will replace the color on. It is the Destination Image. Click with the right button on the background layer in the layers panel, and then select double layer.
By default this new layer will be called background copy. I will rename this layer color replace, and then click OK to complete the step.

We will work with this layer duplicated to preserve the original image. Use your choice selection tool to select the entire area where the color must be replaced. Yet again, I used the magic wand tool.

Now, go to file menu and choose Image > adjustments > Match color.

The colour of the Match Options window will appear. For this example we need not to worry the three sliders under Image Options. Under the statistical picture, make sure that both boxes are checked. Check the top check box means that only the zone selected in the Source Image will be used for the color matching instead of colors of the entire image. The second box is checked indicating that only the zone selected in the Destination Image will be affected. Next to the Source: select the Image Source. You will see a small image of the Source next to the name of the Source Image. Click on OK.

In my example, the Jersey is now red instead of blue, but there is still some work to be done. We will adjust the contrast of the new red Jersey. Make sure this layer is still selected in the layers panel. In the layers panel, click on create new fill or the layer adjustment and select levels.

A histogram will appear.

There are three arrows at the bottom of the histogram. A black left control the darkness of the shaded areas. There is a grey arrow in the Middle, and then a right white control highlights. I'm going to slide the incoming arrows black and white until the contrast in the Red examines how I want to go. If your image is faded, this is how correct you. Now, I am going to in the layers panel to select brightness, so the overall colour is not affected by this new layer, only the brightness of the color.

There you have it. We have an image of the sample perfect to send to our customers. It will be much easier for our customers to decide if they like how the jersey and shorts look together now. With a blue top and Red they were almost certain does not in any of the game. This process came in very handy, allowing us to present to the client a corresponding uniform.

Photoshop tutorial - color accents method 2

Use a fun technique in Photoshop is to accentuate colour. You can add focus to your images, by selecting a photo black and white and then the true-color to elements shine through can be. They accent your child in a photo by everything except them black and white, or the bright colors of a single flower to bring. Bright colors work best. I use Adobe Photoshop CS3, to this tutorial should do, but you are able to follow the instructions for all versions of Photoshop.

Open your photo in Photoshop and use the clipping tool as needed.

In the layers panel of right-click on the background layer and choose Duplicate layer. Follow this step twice so you have two new levels in the original background layer. Since original layer often (indicated by the lock on the level) is blocked, you are not this layer to modify. If your layers Control Panel is not visible, go to window in the menu bar and select levels. By default will be called this new layer background copy and background copy 2. You can change the name of a level, if you double click on the name of the layer in the layer control module.

Select the top layer in the layers panel.

The selected level will be blue. Select image in the menu bar, > settings > black & white.

A window opens, which you can customize the black and white layer will look like. In this example, I left the default settings, but you can play around with the available predefined options or customize the color bar make the image just the way you want it.

Switch the visibility of the black and white layer next by clicking on the eye, in the layer window layer. Select the color level, by clicking on this layer in the layers panel. The layer are blue point in the area, that it is selected. Now select the magic wand tool from the "Tools" Panel.

The higher, the tolerance further color variation of the magic wand with each click will select. Hold the SHIFT key, click Select multiple areas on the image.

Now select the visibility of the black and white layer again by where the eye icon in the layers control module was you. The eye icon should appear again. Select the Eraser tool in the "Tools" and delete, where the color to shine through. You will notice that the Eraser tool only within the selected scope works.

Disable you the image, by using the magic wand tool again and right click on the image and select "Cancel selection".
