Subscriptions take off

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

subscriptions take offToday, Surf Air, the world's first subscription airline, launched in San Francisco. The new airline aims to shake up the traditional passenger service model in much the same way Netflix upended movie rentals.  Subscribers pay a set fee each month for up to four boarding passes and tailored access to flights between San Francisco, Monterey, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles.

We're not surprised to see more subscriptions take flight, but it is surprising to see the diversity of industries and use cases--from movies to razors to diapers to software.  Regardless, the attraction of the subscription model is consistent across all of these, and it mirrors feedback we've gotten from our own customers:

Convenience. Subscribers get what they want, when they need it. They also always get the latest products and information without hassles. Savings. Subscribers save money upfront and over time, especially if they are frequent users.Reliability. Subscriptions are easier to budget for, and particularly for businesses, subscription services can help balance expenses over time.

In the world of software, we view subscriptions as the future, and as we said on this blog last month, we think all Office customers will choose to subscribe in the next decade. We're already seeing significant momentum with more than one million Office 365 Home Premium subscribers since the product's launch on January 29--a faster adoption rate than reported by DropBox, Facebook and HuluPlus. And, Office 365 for business is Microsoft's fastest growing product ever and is on a $1 billion annual run rate.

It will be fascinating to watch how Surf Air does and whether this model can extend successfully into even broader territory. What do you think? Will Surf Air take off or be grounded? Talk back to @Office or in the comments below to tell us what you think.

Software subscriptions: #progressive or #premature?

ChangeAdobe was a pioneer in the software subscriptions creative cloud, offer their software subscription service through revelation in the last year.  Yesterday, they took the next step by announcing plans to discontinue development of their creative suite or other CS products. All future efforts to concentrate on creative cloud, Adobe will no longer offered his classic, packaged software product in this category.

Industry reaction is mixed. Some Experts show how the future of others to explore challenges and a few ask if Office comes next.

How Adobe think we, that subscription software-as-a-service the future. The benefits for consumers are huge. Subscribers are always up to date. Get the latest and most comprehensive applications.  You can subscriptions through the variety of devices to use the people today. Web services such as SkyDrive, and applications such as Skype are also more easily in subscription services such as the new Office 365 Home Premium.

In contrast to Adobe, we think that shift will take people from software packages to subscription services. Within a decade, we think that everyone that decide which are subscribed to, because the benefits are undeniable. In the meantime, we are obliged, bid-, premium-quality software as a package sold and powerful services as subscription sold.

As evidence for this point, since the launch of Office 365 Home Premium and Office 365 University in January have to buy more than a quarter of the consumer Office selected the subscription. This has exceeded our expectations as the software subscriptions are relatively new for most consumers. So, the shift has happened perhaps faster than we originally thought, and Adobe helps the trail blaze. Tell us @Office or in the comments what you think.  Software subscriptions: #progressive or #premature?

Creative Cloud subscriptions: Cross-language, cross-platform

Jeff Tranberry notes some differences between Creative Cloud membership & traditional Adobe software licenses:

Cross-Platform License: Access to both the Mac OS and Windows versions of the desktop applications and the ability to install them on your primary computer and one backup computer.

Multi-Language License: Access to any language version in which the CS6 and other desktop applications are available. Unlike owning the traditional licensed version of a Creative Suite product, Creative Cloud membership gives you the freedom and flexibility to choose whichever language works best for you in any given application.

Both of these are changes many of us have wanted to make for a long time, and I’m glad to see that they’ve arrived.

Accessing multi-language support is simple, but the UI isn’t obvious.  In the new Adobe Application Manager (AAM), install whatever apps you want in your primary language, then go into Preferences (upper left corner) and switch to a different language. App links that had said “Installed” will revert back to “Install,” though you may need to restart AAM for that to happen.  You can then install apps in the newly chosen language.

After installing multiple language versions Photoshop, you can go into its preferences, switch the UI language, and apply it via app restart.  (There’s just one copy of the app on disk, plus multiple language packs.)  It appears that not all apps support this switching capability, but at least reinstalling in a different language is fairly painless (and can be done as often as needed).
