Information about the Hotmail / Outlook.com failure on March 12

Outlook.com links preview a couple of weeks, and heard that we shared, that we begin the hundreds of millions of people, with Hotmail on the new, modern Outlook.com experiences to update.  We had done several pilots during the preview period and learned a ton. Overall the upgrade is very frozen - upgraded people have much more quickly than we had expected.  The vast majority of people who use our services are enjoying a smooth experience during this time and the new experience of Outlook.com.  That is, we had a problem yesterday and offer a deeper insight into what was going to happen.

Before we want to dive, in the detail we anyone sincerely to apologize, which could be accessed during the interruption to their emails. Failures are something we take very seriously and invest a significant amount of our time and energy in doing our best to prevent.

At 13:35 PM PDT on March 12, 2013 there is an interruption of the service, some of the people concerned access to a lesser extent, of SkyDrive service, but primarily Hotmail.com Outlook.com. Availability has been fully restored in the course of the afternoon and evening and 5:43 am PDT on March 13, 2013.

In the afternoon of the 12th, in a physical region in one of our data centers, we conducted our regular process of updating the firmware on a central part of our physical plant. This is an update, it had not done before successfully, but in this particular case in unexpected ways. This mistake led to a rapid and extensive temperature spike in the data center. This tip was important enough, before it was reduced, it causes our guarantees to come to space for a large number of servers in this part of the data center.

Access to mailboxes prevents these security measures installed on these servers and also does not prevent automatically to allow failover and continued access for other pieces of our infrastructure. Parts of the infrastructure of Hotmail.com Outlook.com and SkyDrive hosts this section of the data center, and so were some of the people who are trying to influence access to these services.

As soon as the protective measures on these systems appeared, the team was immediately alerted and immediately began to work to restore the access. On the basis of the failure scenario, there was again a mixture of infrastructure software and human intervention, which was necessary to the core infrastructure to bring online. Requiring this type of human intervention is not the norm for our services and restoring significant time added.

Show you, that brought team access in waves through the night. The majority of the affected mailboxes have been restored before midnight and 05:30 rest completed fully.

We hope that this helped to provide understanding of the incident and again we sincerely apologize and regret the impact of this failure had on you all.  Now that we are through the resolution, we are also hard at work to ensure that that does not happen again.

SkyDriving after Italy about OneNote

The Colloseum in Rome

Rome, the eternal city!  I studied Latin for five grueling years, but somehow never managed to visit the Etruscan peninsula. After longing I convinced way for a few decades, my wife and friends, to make a trek Italia.

With so many fellow passengers, we need an easy way to plan our trip.  Sure, we could use e-Mail, but it does not let us gather and refine our ideas in one place.

There is OneNote on SkyDrive super handy. Everyone can contribute their thoughts, even if they have installed not OneNote on their computer and can work together on various Geräten--mobile phone, Tabletor PC. That means that we can plan our holidays can happen anywhere.

As an organizer of the trip it is my job to create our notebook. I looking SkyDrive and my SkyDrive account login.

Note: You must log on a Windows Live ID in SkyDrive. If you have still no Live ID, click the selected button to create one.

When I'm logged in, I create a OneNote notebook to the OneNote icon click.

After I click on the icon opens where I type in a name for the notebook-"Rome at last."  Then, as the de-facto leader or as I soon to realize that I need a travel accounts of Rome, that planet rival lonely, Editor to create sections and add pages so that our team of restaurant offers that best Pasta Primavera can fight. Everything, what I do is click on the Insert tab, and then click new page or new section.. .for travel.

After you add a new section, I can change the name by using just a name at the top of the page.

Now it's time to leave the others their alternately as authors. I click on the file tab, and then click the share button.

All I have to do is continue my friends e-Mail type, then check the recipient can edit and require all those who report it accesses (this is the safest route). Click then on send, and my friends an email with a link to the OneNote notebook.

My friends can now their Wunschzettel--images-add the notebook. And if every one of us want to know, who found the ancient ruins, the the Lonely Planet left out, can we Show authors click you see in the Edit view reading view tab or its name.

We exchange ideas back and forth until we on our route-decided in any case see the Colosseum but skip the Roman holiday hike. If one afternoon we choose to go separate ways, we can access our personal guide to all of our devices. Given our thorough (or is the compulsive) planning, we finally know that we announce in the situation, we must be experienced the best Rome offer-from soup to nuts AB Ovo usque ad mala!

Note:This post includes OneNote on SkyDrive, which is a Web version of the OneNote desktop application. The desktop version has many more features, such as adding audio and video, customize the look, attach files to pages and much more. They can upload a desktop OneNote notebook on SkyDrive and share them as a Web version (other people need no OneNote installed).

You asked about VLOOKUP

@timjs: Here’s a bit more information, from a friend in product support (thanks, Ryan!):

“Most of the issues we see in Excel 2007/2010 deal with an old way of making sure to get everything included in the VLOOKUP. Namely, using the entire column as a range (for example, C:H) instead of where your data actually lies (for example, C1:H5000).  In Excel 2003, this wasn’t a big issue because this version had a smaller number of worksheet cells to look through. However, with the increased row and column limits in Excel 2007/2010, this may cause performance issues. In other words, with a formula like =VLOOKUP(B1,C:H,2,FALSE), every time Excel wants to calculate that cell it needs to look through about 6.3 million cells.  If you have a VLOOKUP formula in thousands of cells, you will definitely see a performance hit.”

This may not be the root of your issue with pasting, Tim, but I think it’s worth sharing here, so that others can avoid potential performance pitfalls when working with VLOOKUP. Without seeing your workbook, it's hard to troubleshoot. Again, I'd send you to MS Answers and also refer you to these four excellent articles:

Q & A: things that you really want to know about Excel if function

image

Today's post is brought to you by Frederique Klitgaard. Frédérique is a writer on Office.com (Note: this is a previously published post we publish again because it answers many.)

On my previous post about the if function, I showed follow-up in which you a very simple application of this formula, I would like to address some questions about how to use this function regularly coming.

The classification is pointed out to me, example isn't the best for the if function, but I think that it still helps illustrate the answers to the following questions.

Yes, you can do this using conditional formatting. I have a conditional formatting rule to distinguish the different results of the formula in the worksheet, a different color for cells that contain specific text.

image

For more information about using conditional formatting see Add, modify, search, or clear conditional formats.

Yes, meet to multiple conditions, you can use the and include and/or or functions, so that you can specify additional criteria, the up in value, whether true or false. If test results are I for testing the entire quarter, I can, for example, the AND function, to determine which completed the quarter with flying colors on the basis of the following formula:

IF(and(B2+E2>=178), "Excellent!", "")

image

Yes, you can text in all arguments to this function, as long as you enclose it in quotation marks. In the examples above, the formulas have returned text-based results, but you can also text in the argument test as . Want to use a star system, in addition to class, can I use, for example, the following formula:

IF (D2 = "A", "**", IF (D2 = "B", "**", IF (D2 = "C", "**", "")))

image

Keep in mind that two of the cells were empty. By adding two quotation marks without text in between (the last argument of this formula), I specify that cells should be empty, if the values are not the criteria. And Yes, I centered the stars after entering the formula just for looks!

Yes, you can include calculations in the formula, do the percentages. Use a point system, I could use such as the following formula:

= IF (B2 > 79, B2 B. 1%, IF (B2 > 89%, B2 ** 5%, ""))

image

Because commas argument in a formula are used as delimiters, be they carefully not to use as the decimal separator in the values that you want to calculate.

For more information on this feature, see our function reference article, If function.

Designer Sally Cox Speaks About Adobe Touch Apps

Designer Sally Cox caught our eye with her work created using the Adobe Touch Apps, including Photoshop Touch. We got in touch with Sally to speak with her about her work, and how the apps have changed her workflow. Check out her interview below, along with a sample of her work using Adobe Touch Apps.

Description: I duplicated the layer, added brush strokes using the dark blue from the water (via the eyedropper) set to transparent. I built up the contrast using the strokes with hardness. I enlarged the stroke and added feathering for the top and bottom edges and then kept building the color. Finally, I used the brush with “Shadows and Highlights” effect to paint over the land in the background, adding details.

Description: I duplicated the layer, then used a brush set with the “Comic” effect applied, and I painted in details of the rocks and branches in the water. Next, I added two duplicated layers with blending modes applied – saturation and darken. A final layer using a brush with “Shadows and Highlights” effects was added to create more contrast.

Description: I used a brush set to “Comic” effect with high opacity and painted vertical strokes on the wall, picking up detail between the panels. A transparent red brush stroke on the floor, overlaid with brown opaque cross strokes. Same brown cross strokes on the top and ride side.  Strokes of “Darken” effect all over and finally text set to “Overlay” blending mode.

Description: I selected the dog (my Jack Russell, Lily) and deleted the background. On a duplicate layer, I chose “Saturate” to play with the color, and then “Graphic Pen” to create a cartoonish effect and flatten it out.

Creative Layer: How have the Adobe Touch Apps changed your creative workflow?

Sally Cox: I always took my laptop to visit a client, in case I needed to work up a quick comp. Opening Photoshop or another Adobe app in front of a client can be a troublesome process for me. They want to know what all the tools do, we end up getting sidetracked and I prefer not to “show my magic” in front of the clients.  Now I can take my tablet, which I use for jotting quick notes, and can open PS Touch for a quick comp or Proto to sketch up a website, right on the spot.

Of the different Touch Apps, which is most instrumental to your creative process and why?

I have two favorites. PS Touch has such depth, including layers and selection tools, blending modes and color adjustments. I can access Google and even my Facebook albums directly from within PS Touch, in addition to grabbing images and other files off Creative Cloud. I can easily create a realistic looking comp for a client or just play with images when I am stuck at the airport. I store my work directly on my tablet or upload it to the cloud to fine tune later.

I find Proto to be the best tool for quickly whipping up a website prototype. The touch gestures are not only fast but also fun to use. Within seconds, I can create a working navbar, header or body text. When I add multiple pages and link everything together, my client gets to see exactly what the working site will look like.

With the ability to use Adobe Touch Apps & create on mobile devices, we’re no longer chained to our desks. Tell us, where is your favorite place to create?

I do my best work with the Touch tools sitting in a coffee shop or waiting for my next flight. I like the fact that I no longer have to balance my laptop on my lap if space is limited. The tablet is much more maneuverable and lightweight.

As a designer you’re constantly being challenged to think outside the box. How have Adobe Touch apps assisted in this?

The ability to take my tablet anywhere is the first thing that comes to mind. I find I am taking my creative tools with me to places I didn’t before. Sometimes a laptop can be cumbersome, and sketching on a paper napkin doesn’t lend a professional touch.

If you had the opportunity to travel to anywhere in the world with your Touch Apps, where would it be and why?

Since we haven’t clarified there is any life on the moon, I would say anywhere in Europe. I was on a business trip to Germany last Fall, and ended up giving Photoshop lessons to the woman next to me on my Paris flight. And flying to Pennsylvania in January, I taught PS Touch and Revel to the woman next to me. Seems there are curious people everywhere!

Where do you find inspiration?

Everywhere I look! I hike a lot and take lots of photos out in the wild and at the beach. The colors of nature inspire me. On a recent hike to Sunol Regional Wilderness, I saw fungus growing on rocks that was the most vibrant shades of orange and green. And I like to study the arrangement of shapes in nature, and tie that in with my design work.

About Sally: Sally Cox is an Adobe Certified Instructor in the Bay Area, who also runs Creative Suite User Group of San Jose. She specializes in Adobe training and eLearning design and production for her company, kreatable.com. Sally regularly travels to teach Adobe software and currently is helping to spread the word on the new Adobe Touch Apps. A lap swimmer and dog lover, she also enjoys hiking, and pen and ink sketching.

Windows engineers share what they like most about Windows 8 (VIDEO)

Im using it now as i type this to you, Because i cant find were to post feedback ill post it here.

Right now i haven't had any problems, no crashing, no hardware failures, no sluggishness its working perfectly, however i think the non metro applications that get added to the metro style start slide could have a better integration from your end, Like were the tile changes background color depending on the icon color, right click to uninstall applications like it can be done with the metro applications, and make the scrollbar the same across the whole OS, so exactly the same as the Metro IE Browser, i think it should be the same on the normal IE10 browser, as right now i kinda thing it looks ugly and well blocky

The Internet has caused a lot of changes in the learning process on the various tools used in computing. First off were those online computer tutorial courses that offer reading materials and accounts on a tutorial course provider's website. Upon registration for an online computer tutorial course, which usually required people to cough up a huge amount of cash, people are considered formal students of the computer training course. They are given access to the forum and discussion boards, which contain necessary information on the course.

With faster and more accessible Internet connections, the profitability of online tutorial courses did not take the assumed leap it should have taken, along with the improvements on Internet connectivity. This is because despite the accessibility and affordability of faster Internet connections and more secure online transactions, people around the world still could not afford the registration fees that most online computer tutorial course providers are asking for. Plus, how could these providers expect a huge stream of people registering for an online computer tutorial course when a huge percentage of these people could not even browse the Internet?

Video tutorials on computer training, specific application tips and tricks, and even on computer hardware troubleshooting and optimization techniques are not new methods of learning the craft of such IT-related skills. But over online computer training courses, these video tutorials have a lot of advantages to boot. Yet, you have to make sure that what you're getting on either a VCD or a DVD, is well worth your cash and your time.

There are dozens of video tutorial providers who integrate tutorial systems on their videos that aren't quite useful or even aren't as efficient and effective as an online computer training course. As such, you should check the credibility of your sources of video tutorials on computer training techniques and tactics. Maximum Software has released a new suite of video tutorials for each level of skill and a specified field of interest.

With a company such as Maximum Software and its years of efficient IT-related products and services, credibility is already assured. Plus, you are also assured of the most updated and accurate video tutorials on computer training techniques and tactics due to the IT professionals that they employ as creators of the video tutorials. After all, why would you need a video on application-specific tips and tricks when you could easily discover such tactics yourself?

With the credibility of such providers of video tutorials on computer training, the next step for you to take is to carefully consider the training system integrated in the DVDs or VCDs of their computer tutorial suite. The main disadvantage of online computer training courses is that these programs do not cater to the difference in pacing and learning systems of each individual. But with video tutorials from credible sources, a seamless learning and teaching system is integrated in each video tutorial offered. Maximum Software's video tutorials are designed to provide users tips and tricks sans the time pressure, thus providing people of a learning process at their own pace.

Pacing when it comes to learning computer techniques vary from each person to the other. With video tutorials that can be rewound and fast-forwarded, paused and stopped, and can be viewed numerous times in the person's discretion, it would not really matter much if the videos were created with slow or fast teaching process. With the video tutorial suite packages of Maximum Software, careful considerations have been made so as to get the actual pacing that is on the middling portions of the learning spectrum.

The virtual lessening or total absence of time pressure in learning the techniques of each video tutorial package of Maximum Software is also a very huge advantage over those online computer training courses. Online courses abruptly end without making sure that all formally registered students have learned everything there is to learn from the program. Come to think of it, these providers of online computer training courses don't even assure that their students have learned something, even anything, of the things that should be helping them advance in their technology-related fields!

Maximum Software provides either newbies or intermediate computer users the option to choose a specific field of interest when it comes to their video tutorials. This would definitely be a big boost on the efficiency and effectiveness of the entire learning process. This option would not bore the person of the techniques and tactics included in the video, for they themselves chose a specific field of interest.

Plus, carefully dividing a field of interest into sub-classifications makes the learning process not only easier, but efficient as it should be. This avoids the mental stress or information overload that a user may likely experience given the broad range of topics in a single video tutorial. For instance, Maximum Software has divided the Windows Office XP application video tutorial suite into several classifications. As such, those who only want to learn Word can learn everything about Word, and be overwhelmed with information on, say, the less used Access program of the Windows Office XP suite.

The video tutorials from Maximum Software can be securely bought and downloaded from the company's website. You can also check on the credibility of this company and the reliability of their security measures when it comes to online transactions involving money and personal information. This would provide you with more peace of mind regarding the reputation and credibility of Maximum Software. However, this company has been in the IT industry, delivering quality products and services in the field. With such a track record, it would be rather doubtful if the company doesn't appear as credible and reputable as it actually is.

Maximum Software products are designed for maximum accessibility and readability. Users would not get lost with information on their chosen videos because the functions and features of the products are conveniently displayed on the site. There are detailed information on each video tutorial package to be found on the website. Contact information of the company can also be found on almost all pages of the websites, a feature which just goes to show the sincere intent to encourage proper website design and development.

Furthermore, Internet surfers would find it very easy to navigate their way through the website because of its informative and seamless design. As mentioned, information are provided regarding the corresponding features of the video packages. Upon acquiring the necessary information on a product or service you are interested in, you can now take the next step towards buying yourself an efficient and effective video tutorial on your chosen field of interest. The website properly gives you further instructions on how you can get the product, and a standard set of security measures and privacy provisions which protect the user and the company alike.

The website lists the selection for your chosen video tutorial package. You can learn various versions of Windows, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and more. The company even has video tutorials on Ebay! Plus, there are a couple of good promos here and there that you can avail with your purchase. You can browse and select the bonus packages you can get, according to your tutorial needs and your own budget. After doing so, you are taken to the online payment transaction, which is very secure in terms of cash transfers and personal information exchange between the user and the company. After a successful transaction, you will be asked your preferred delivery mode, which would either be through downloading the video tutorial on a secure FTP server or physical transference systems.

If you need more information on acquiring the very useful and efficient video tutorial on the computer training course of your choice, you can check out the provider's website by clicking here http://www.software-tutoring.com

In general the products contained in Adobe Photoshop CS3 are intended for professional use, but it is not that you need appropriate training more out of this software.

With Adobe Illustrator CS3, you can create sharp bordered artistic illustrations such as clip art, cartoons and other complex geometric patterns. You can have environmental exploration of full color with the help of this software, with which it allows you to apply colors dynamically to the selected objects.

Note that Adobe Photoshop CS3 is a powerful program that can in turn make it difficult to learn because of its sophistication.
